Overview

Whether you are brand new to programming in general or coming to Java from another language, John Smiley's Learn to Program with Java offers a truly approachable tutorial designed with the beginner in mind. Covering Java syntax and essential programming concepts, this text can be used at home to simulate a semester's worth of Java study. Like Smiley's previous titles, the salient feature of this text is the author's scenario-based presentation style. Instead of addressing the reader directly, Smiley simulates the experience of about 18 first-semester programming students facing Java for the first time. As the students develop a grade calculation project in Java (and improve it with object-oriented features later on), basic questions are raised and answered with the reader "overhearing" the author's consistently clear and patient explanation of key programming concepts.

Excellent book for beginning Java Programmers

Professor Smiley offers a breezey yet informative introduction to Java. This book takes the reader through structured exercises and each is explained appropriately.

The format is unique- dialog of a classroom - but effective.

I recommend this book highly for entry level Java students who want an effective book that will get them started with effective programming in Java.

THE Starter Book for COBOL Programmers converting to Java

If you are coming from a Procedural Background, such as COBOL, you'll find this to be the best book available to provide a transition. I look forward to John coming out with 'Intermediate' and/or 'Advanced' Java Programming books. I'll be glad to pre-order.

    Excellent Beginners book !!!

After trying 2 other 'beginning' Java books (1 of which I returned), this book was the best beginning Java book, I have ever read. This takes you step by step learning Java, learning a little bit more in each chapter, plus the author works with the same program, building upon this program in each chapter, with new concepts you just learned. I can't say enough about this book to give it justice, go to your local bookstore and review it for yourself, you will see how easy the author makes learning JAVA. This book is so good, it is not like reading a technical book, but reading your daily newspaper, it is that easy to read. The only 'knocks' on this book is there is no CD containing the sourcecode and it is not at the authors website. Also, he does not cover using Databases with Java, but hoepfully he will write another book on this topic. If there is only 1 book on Beginning Java you want to get (and who can really afford multiple books at the price they charge you today), get this one.

Quite Good but BIG WARNING TO NOOK OWNERS!

This book is great. The way the author teaches is great and I was enjoying it until I came across one fatal flaw. If you own a regular nook(black and white) in areas where you must copy code down the chart goes off the page leaving you clueless so I wouldn't recommend buying until problem is fixed.

    A Masterpiece

I congratulate Professor Smiley for this extraordinary work. This is the best book I have read in the field so far. My wish is that he continues with the intermediate (JDBC,Servlets,JSP,etc.) and then advanced (EJB, J2EE Servers,Webservices,XML,etc.) so that I can better comprehend them all easily with the same pleasure and joy. Although I know some of them, it will be a great pleasure to see these concepts through his mind in his virtual classroom. I am very happy to come across with this masterpiece. I am from Philadelphia, too and proud to see that this book is from my hometown. Thank you Dr.Smiley.

Finally THE Java book for Beginners

I bought this book after many many months (and $$$$) of buying others and John Smiley has written a book for those 'true' beginners. I have 15 years in COBOL and was trying to learn something new, but other books were too confusing, but this book takes you step by step SLOWLY (which is a good thing)to building a working program that can be used at the end for future projects. I too hope he comes out with another Java book which touches on working with Databases. This is a book that will give you a strong starting foundation on learning Java and the book is like a novel, not your typical 'techie' book.

    THE BEST FOR ALL

Great book for beginners! I really liked this book. It covered the whole software development process in depth. After spending a lot of $$ on books and classes, I feel like I really got somewhere with this book.
