John Smiley is a professional contract programmer who spends his spare time tutoring at his local university. This combination means that the book is packed with tried and true working methods presented in an intuitive and jargon-free manner. John also drew on his classroom experiences to bring some real-worldliness to the characters in the book and to the problems (and solutions) that come up throughout the project the book is based upon.

Starting on a good note, the book is very informative and educational, I learned a lot reading it. BUT¿ The writing style is annoying at best. The book is written as a class room discussion environment, so there is a lot of jabber in the book. I think most of the time it takes him 3 pages to say what he could have said in 1. Also the book includes Visual Basic software (which is nice) to program on, but it is only a demo version and you can¿t save your work to .EXE files to use outside the program (but what do you expect for $30).
