Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This entry in the "Sand Castle Keeping the Peace" series focuses on an introduction to the differences between people and how understanding can help foster peace. Conduct of life and interpersonal relations are the answer. Prejudices and toleration are underlying themes even though the text reads like fiction. It is a short book but covers much in the few words and well-chosen photographs. The foreword-like page states: Taking the time to learn about others keeps the peace. The last page asks: What can you do to keep the peace? Both will help the teacher guide questions and discussion, though the young reader would probably get the message without adult intervention. There is a Glossary with fairly simple meanings. The format is quite attractive and easily-handled by a small child. This title will also help fill a library's collection in the diversity area. 2004, ABDO Publishing Company, Ages 5 to 8.

K-Gr 2-These books offer brief explanations of what each topic means and then provide ideas about how to cope with various situations. They end with the same question: "What can you do to keep the peace?" Ideas for anger management include talking to someone, taking a time out, exercise, and writing or drawing your thoughts. Some suggestions for dealing with bullies include talking with an adult, staying away from aggressors, and finding new friends. The third volume explains that different families celebrate different holidays or speak different languages. It encourages readers to learn about other ways of life through their friends. Large, full-color photographs of children of various ethnic backgrounds clearly show their feelings through facial expressions. Functional books for use in classroom discussion or with counselors.-Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
