School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5 Snippets of legends and lore ranging from Genghis Khan to four short paragraphs about Gaudior and Charles Wallace Murry of L'Engle's A Swiftly Tilting Planet (Farrar, 1978) chop along in short sentences and fragments of sentences. It's not fanciful enough to be fantasy and not factual enough to be informational. The illustrations are reminiscent of the late '30s and early '40s with scarlet lips, blue quarter-circle or Disney-doe eyes and yellow hair. A wood nymph ``dressed in the color of mist'' has bilious chartreuse hair and clothes and slightly yellower skin. For stories of this mythical beast, turn to The Unicorn and the Lake (Dial, 1982) by Marianna Mayer, The Unicorn and the Plow (Dutton, 1982) by Louise Moeri, Sarah's Unicorn (Lippincott, 1979) by Bruce and Katherine Coville or, for older readers, Dragons and Unicorns: a Natural History (St. Martin's Pr, 1982) by Karin and Paul Johnsgard . Virginia Opocensky, Lincoln City Libraries, Nebr.
