With at least one case presentation for each of the mental disorders catalogued in DSM-5—and multiple cases for nearly half of the disorders—Learning DSM-5 by Case Example has been meticulously designed to aid practitioners and students of all levels in psychology, psychiatry, social work, counseling, and psychiatric nursing develop internalized prototypes of DSM-5 disorders by first describing each disorder in relatable terms and subsequently illustrating how these symptom constellations manifest in real-life settings using clinical case material.

Janet B. W. Williams, Ph.D., is Professor Emerita of Clinical Psychiatric Social Work (in Psychiatry and Neurology) at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Research Scientist and Deputy Chief of the Biometrics Research Department (Retired) at New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York, New York; she is also Senior Vice President of Global Science at MedAvante, Inc., in Hamilton, New Jersey.

Robert L. Spitzer, M.D., was Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Research Scientist and Chief of the Biometrics Research Department (Retired) at New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York, New York. Description: Case-based learning can be an effective tool for incorporating details of the process of recognizing and diagnosing mental health disorders using the coding system recently revised in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). This book uses clinical cases to highlight useful methods in diagnosis based on the DSM-5 revisions.
Purpose: The editors suggest this work is written "to help undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students in psychology, psychiatry, social work, counseling, and psychiatric nursing learn about DSM-5 diagnoses using a case-based method."
Audience: Though primarily for students in the behavioral health field, the editors note this work may be beneficial for "all clinicians" regardless of their experience, as well as "other professionals, such as primary care physicians, internists, and attorneys" who have an interest in the mental health field.
Features: The book is primarily divided into sections mirroring the actual chapters of the DSM-5. In some instances, multiple cases are used for a specific diagnosis to highlight the variation in symptoms and presentation depending on the individual being evaluated. Cases are followed by brief discussions to add context. There are a limited number of figures throughout the book, which is mostly text, and there are two alphabetical indexes (case name, diagnosis) that accompany the usual concluding index.
Assessment: Most of those who have used prior editions of the DSM are familiar with books using case-based instruction to highlight information useful in the diagnosis of mental health disorders. And while these cases are admittedly simplistic compared to real world situations, they offer useful insights into some of the challenges associated with diagnosing individuals with psychiatric issues and offer readers access to the significant expertise of seasoned clinicians. The discussions are succinct but informative, and the inclusion of multiple cases for certain diagnoses is particularly valuable in illustrating the variation in presentation in individuals diagnosed with the same psychiatric condition. The indexes are practical and easy to use. Overall, this is a valuable addition to any clinician's library and one that can be referred to repeatedly, whether the reader is a novice or experienced.
