Children's Literature - Nancy Baumann
A pet can be a reptile or amphibian. Both are quiet and are fascinating to watch. It is important to understand how to care for this type of pet. Readers learn the difference between reptiles and amphibians, toads and frogs, and turtles and tortoises. Feeding live animals to a pet may not be something a pet owner wants to do. A snake may not be a good choice if a family member is afraid. These are things to consider before adopting or purchasing a reptile or amphibian. Some of these animals carry salmonella, and owners must wash their hands before and after handling the pet reptile or amphibian. A reptile or amphibian should not be brought home if a household has small children, elderly, or sick family members. These unique pets require special care such as heat lamps, UV light, and a large enough home to hide, burrow, swim and exercise. A vet visit is essential to ensure the well-being of a reptile or amphibian. Owners should create of list of questions for the vet prior to the visit. Care must be taken when handling this type of pet as the animal may be skittish and bite. If bitten, an owner should wash the injury and apply an antibiotic ointment. This type of pet can live a long time so an owner must be prepared for a long commitment. Large and easy to read text combined with bright photographs of various reptiles and amphibians make this a very attractive selection. Valuable information regarding these unusual pets will delight elementary-aged children. A table of contents, glossary, web links and additional reads are provided. Part of the "Beginning Pet Care with American Humane" series. Reviewer: Nancy Baumann
