Taylor Henry is working at Wildwood Stables in exchange for boarding fees for Prince Albert and Pixie, the two horses she helped rescue from starvation and certain death. Taylor sees a notice for an English-style jumping competition at nearby Ross River Ranch, and desperately wants to enter, since the first prize is jumping lessons with the Ross River Ranch head instructor. Mercedes, the bossy assistant junior barn manager with a mysterious secret in her past, offers to coach Taylor in English riding so Taylor can compete in the jumping competition. Taylor is puzzled by Mercedes' willingness to coach her, and Mercedes' reluctance to explain why she is so eager to go to Ross River Ranch, but accepts the offer of training enthusiastically. After[MSJ1] weeks of intense training, Taylor is ready and excited for the competition. To her dismay, Prince Albert throws a shoe right before the twosome is supposed to head in to the ring. Mercedes reveals that her old horse, Monty, has been bought by Ross River Ranch and is a terrific show jumper. Mercedes and Taylor sneak into Ross River Ranch's barn, and saddle up Monty. Taylor and Monty are a terrific team, and Taylor wins her first competition. Mercedes is able to visit with her beloved former pet, and Taylor learns that Mercedes' bossiness hides a sad past. This novel is part of Scholastic's "Wildwood Stables" series, which focuses on the young riders and their horses who board at Wildwood Stables. The plot is very predictable and some of the characters are one-dimensional: mean, rich girl Plum abuses her horse and has no redeeming qualities, while Plum's cousin Eric, on whom Taylor has a crush, is tall, dark, handsome, without any flaws, and great with horses to boot. Readers with a passion for horses will appreciate the training, riding, and grooming details that are threaded throughout the book, and tween readers will enjoy the G-rated stirrings of romance.
