    People need to write more book reviews...

    Hello All, This is a true story. 6 Months ago, I had no idea what a closing bracket was. For that matter I had no idea what truly went behind building a webpage. I happened to purchase this book because I was always inclined to learn how to build a webpage and the book cover just had a very earthy appeal to it. Yes, I'm superficial but in this case it has served me well. I can honestly say that this book is a very clear and concisely written for the true beginner. What impressed me most was how well thought out the chronological order of this book was. The author, Jennifer Nierdst Robbins, really made going from step 1 to step 2 to step 3 and so on a seamless lesson rather than a boring piece of text. I'm definitely looking forward to any new books that the author, Jennifer Nierdst Robbins produces. Hopefully one covering beginning Javascript or a very advanced CSS book. Also, I'd like to write a rebuttal for the 2 negative comments dated prior to this one. Re: A reviewer, Mary Mailler - I'm confused about your confusion. You mention you've read other html/css books and already have a basic understanding of html. You also mention that this book was for a class so I'm suspecting that the teacher/professor was guiding you through the book step by step, let alone the author was too. What the heck is there to be confused about? Ask the teacher. Re: Too many errors, Freeman - You mean errors as in predominately grammatical errors. You'd have to fault that to the editor of the book. Still grammatical errors however unacceptable do not change the content of a book. Sorry for being a cynical arse but cynicism brings out cynicism in me. Lastly, I'd just like to input that I'm very thankful for reading this book. I actually work at a web agency as a web developer now and really feel that this book has helped me in my initial development. But, I'm still a growing developer so don't expect this book to perform any profound miracles. Just expect it to be a good book.

    Very Helpful!

    I loved this book! It was a great help for me as an amateur getting back into web design after a five year gap. The section on HTML was clear and the tutorials were easy to follow. The introduction to CSS was outstanding. (As for the errors, the large majority were in urls and references, and were not critical at all to understanding the text or exercises. ) I would recommend this to anybody who wants to step in and learn the nuts and bolts of design with html and CSS.

    A reviewer

    Sorry I had to get this text for a class. I've read other books on html, this one, is particularly confusing compared to others I've read. Even though I have a basic understanding of html and am self taught, I decided to take a formal class in it, and I feel sorry for the other students trying to learn from this book, there's just not enough sample code, the code is written out of sequence, requiring beginner students who have no idea what they're doing to organize it themselves. Sorry, but there are other books that are better, and I'm buying one today before I fall any further behind.

    Too many errors

    I bought this book and tried to read it but it seemed to have a lot of errors, continued reading only revealed more errors. Then I checked the publishers site and yes, they list more than 200 errors. I did not want to edit their book for them so I returned it for a refund. Do not buy this book and if you bought it, return it. Publishers should not expect their readers to correct their mistakes, not to mention deal with the agony of trying to learn a subject from an inaccurate source.

    Highly, highly recommended

    I was very impressed with this book, as it provides an excellent introduction to a standards-based approach for creating web sites. Developers or designers who are new to writing HTML, or individuals who are simply looking for a refresher book should look no further. The author takes the reader through the whole process of creating a web site: from HTML, to adding style elements, to basic graphics considerations, to more advanced topics. This is a very well thought out, thorough book. Frankly, I was surprised at the depth of material included in this book. In addition to an excellent CSS reference, the author goes into more advanced topics, including the CSS box model, what exactly is Unicode, and even how to create web graphics. The addition of this extra material will satisfy advanced readers, but also give beginning HTML coders something to work up towards. In other words, once you cover the basic material of this book, there¿s still more material for you to learn. If I had my way, I¿d make this book required reading for all web developers. This is a great addition to any web developer¿s library. Even those who already have a lot of experience with creating web sites¿you might learn something.
