Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Chelsea S. Couillard-Smith
This nonfiction early reader introduces children to basic facts about the leatherback turtle. Starting with their size, unique leathery shell, and favorite foods, and covering their extensive geographic range and life cycle, students looking for information for reports should find this a good starting point. Marx also touches on threats to these peaceful creatures, and briefly mentions ways in which humans can help protect the leatherback. Divided into five short chapters, each one to two page spread includes a few short sentences with a combination of basic vocabulary and more advanced terms specific to the topic. Words such as "endangered" and "hatchling" are clearly defined. A number of these vocabulary terms are also clearly defined in a glossary in the back of the book. Occasional maps and diagrams illustrate key concepts, and full page, color photographs of leatherback turtles in the wild connect to the text and are sure to attract young animal lovers, but offer few cues for beginning readers. Early readers would benefit from additional visual support for many of the difficult terms. Overall, elementary students ready for more challenging vocabulary and sentence structure will enjoy reading about these creatures, and should find adequate information for school assignments. An index, additional reading, and Internet links are also included. Reviewer: Chelsea S. Couillard-Smith
