Overview

Blackberry Smoke is living proof that some things do get better with age. Formed in 2009, this hard-rocking Atlanta, Georgia quintet have been on the road almost as long as they've been together. After slogging it out for years as a bar band that independently released albums, they eventually got opening slots for national touring country and rock acts. After opening for his band on tour, Zac Brown gave them their first real break and signed them to his Southern Ground label, which released The Whippoorwill in 2012 (their first record to be issued internationally, through Earache). Leave a Scar: Live in North Carolina captures a 100-plus-minute live set and ranges across the group's catalog, showcasing the depth in its songwriting, arranging, and performing. What this live presentation reveals is the taut balance Blackberry Smoke present. While Southern rock is an obvious reference point and provides the theatricality in performance, bluegrass, outlaw, and honky tonk country are deep in their veins as well. These cats are no mere revival act; they can they play, sure, but the songwriting -- from the very beginning -- and arranging stand out too. Check the pumped-up boogie in new versions of "Sanctified Woman," "Shake Your Magnolia," and "Six Ways to Sunday." Likewise, the grooving fusion of honky tonk, blues, and R&B in "Everybody Knows She Mine" reveals the influence of Delaney & Bonnie to boot. The unsentimental, melancholic "One Horse Town" is a dark, 21st century take on the sentiments Steve Earle expressed in "Someday." "Payback's a Bitch" is a killer new song. It moves from hard-cracking rock blues and morphs to include spiritual forbears, Macon's Allman Brothers Band's "Midnight Rider," before shifting seamlessly back. There isn't a weak performance among the 22 tracks. The video portion includes visuals of 18 riveting performances, an excellent tour documentary that delves deep into the band's entire history with interviews and bonus footage. Leave a Scar: Live in North Carolina is not only a dynamic live album, but an expertly curated greatest-hits set as well. Newcomers would be well advised to actually start here. After 15 years, Blackberry Smoke is not only getting some payoff, but from the sound of it, their best years are yet to come. [Leave a Scar was also released as a CD/DVD set.]
