All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Shinedown is the latest rock combo to be signed out of Florida (in this case, Jacksonville) since the popular explosion of Creed and, to a point, Limp Bizkit. Shinedown has much more in common with the former on its Atlantic debut, Leave a Whisper -- in fact, there's little on the album that doesn't have something in common with another group that listeners have heard before. The layered harmonies of Alice in Chains dominate the set, which musically is cousin to post-grunge types like Saliva and Puddle of Mudd. Brent Smith's vocals fall somewhere between Glenn Danzig and Layne Staley. He also channels Aaron Lewis for a little of that heavy band balladry on "Better ...

He also channels Aaron Lewis for a little of that heavy band balladry on "Better Version" (sample lyrics: ."..Caught a glimpse, but the reflection's only mine"; "It's almost like I'm paralyzed"). Elsewhere, chunky guitar riffs establish Shinedown as a capable hard rock band. "Left Out" and "In Memory"'s thundering power chords fade to chorus-channel dynamics in the verse, making room for more blustery lyricisms about personal pain, relationship woes, and other "boy, is life sucky" stuff -- essentially, the same set of issues that seemingly all of these post-grunge rockers rant about. Coupled with a two-dimensional sound (sound number one: heavy! Sound number two: brooding!) which varies little from song to song, let alone from the sound of its peers, Shinedown's debut offers some hope that heavy music will right itself from the nasty stumble of its last few years. [The album's bonus track edition featured acoustic and multimedia material.]

    My favorite!

If were stranded on a desert island, I'd want John Locke to keep me safe and this CD to keep my ears happy. It is going to go down in rock history as one of the best. I got it after hearing "Fly From the Inside" on the radio - I took that as my own personal theme song. "45" and "Burning Bright" are the kinds of songs that make me stop whatever I'm doing so I can really listen. The lyrics speak of pain, suffering, redemption and are flawlessly delivered by Brent Smith. I have recommended this CD to at least 50 people. If you like real rock, not prepackaged garbage, then buy this CD. I'm buying the new release today and I'm sure I won't be disappointed!

The best modern rock CD ever!

My headline holds true. When you get tired of listening to the growling, screaming, whining, and the grunting of modern rock, listen to this album. The whole album is worth listening to. I like the line in "fly from the inside" where they say "I can't escape the pain, I can't controll the rain, sometimes I think that I'm gonna go insane. I'm not against what's right, I'm not for what's wrong, i just make my way then I'm gone". Their cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" is great to listen to also. Help them make a profit to make more great music by buying the cd.

    Best Rock Album

This is my second favorite album next to Breaking Benjamin's new release We Are Not Alone. .45 is the best song. I highly recommend this album to any rock fan. You like Breaking Benjamin or Puddle of Mudd you'll love this album so add it to your collection.

    powerful stuff

I can't say enough... I went looking for the cd even before it was released. "Fly from the inside" is just the beginning. I've had this cd for a year and still carry it daily. The styles may be different, but every song is flawless.

    Hard rock hasn't died!

I used to be quite a hard rock fan, listening to Alice in Chains, Breaking Point, Creed (don't laugh, they really do have some damn good songs, no matter what people say), Godsmack, Rollins Band, American Pearl and that kind of stuff. But then, somehow it lost it's appeal to me, and I segued to darker, mellower things, goth, darkwave, dark ambient and the like. Shinedown has rekindled my interest in that forgotten genre. With stunning songwriting, hard, dark riffs, and a singer with a perfectly gruff yet surprisingly expressive voice, Shinedown is *perfect* hard rock. Oh, and "45" is an awesome companion to Stephen King's Dark Tower stories. Sometimes it seems as if it was written about Roland.

Shinedown is the best thing to happen to hard rock in a long time!!!!

I had heard "Fly From The Inside" on the radio and liked the song but didn't know who sang it. But later I heard "45" on WEBN and was just blown away, i found out who sang it and bought the Cd and now Shinedown is my favorite band! I also agree with the other review that says "45" can relate a lot to The Dark Tower series, that is my favorite series of books and I definitely recommend you buy this cd.

Shining down on the music scene

The best new band that has come out in a LONG TIME. Shinedown are the band that have the potential to define rock music for the next few years. "Fly From the Inside" and "45" are all over the radio and Brent Smith's voice is something you won't hear anywhere else but on this album.
