Library Journal

In a fast-paced story packed with foolhardy action, Kansas library volunteer Lexie Starr drives to Schenectady, NY, in search of the truth about the murder of her son-in-law's first wife. This first Lexie Starr novel begins with a bang and ends on just the right note.

—Jo Ann Vicarel
Kirkus Reviews
Upon learning that her recently married daughter's husband may be a murderer, a mother embarks on a search for the truth in Glidewell's debut. Lexie Starr, a dithery Kansas-based widow who volunteers at the local library, chances upon a microfilm story about the unsolved murder of Eliza Pitt, who was probably the first wife of her daughter Wendy's husband Clay. Determined to find out the truth, she tells Wendy that she's going to Myrtle Beach to meet Stone Van Patten, a jewelry dealer she met online while searching for charms for Wendy's lost bracelet. Instead, she goes to Clay's former home in Schenectady, N.Y., near the site where Eliza's body was discovered. The owner of the B&B where she books a room is a tough old lady who's delighted to share everything she knows about the case. Not so the local law. Since Clay was attending the police academy in Boston at the time of his pregnant wife's murder, Lexie heads there to discover that his roommate was a drug-using gay stripper. Returning to Schenectady, she interviews Clay's mentally ill mother, who provides a great deal of information. But how much of it is true? Eventually Van Patten makes the trip to New York to meet Lexie and proves to be a big help, especially when Wendy is kidnapped. A little mystery, a little romance, with the journey more satisfying than the destination. Agent: Mike Valentino/Cambridge Literary Associates

    Exciting Mystery

Lexie Starr discovers that her new son-in-law may have killed his first wife. She starts to investigate his past life by driving from Kansas to Schenectady, NY. Lexie stays in a Bed & Breakfast run by an eccentric elderly woman named Harriet, who owns a foul mouthed parrot. Harriet is a fun character and ends up helping Lexie in her investigation. Lexie meets a new friend, Stone Van Patten, a jeweler from South Carolina, who also helps her in her effort to find out the truth about her son-in-law. Lexie will do anything to find the truth and protect her daughter, her only child, who has no idea that her husband may be a killer and that she may be next on his list. This is an exciting book and leaves you surprised at the ending. It is well written and the different locations make for an interesting read. I am anxiously awaiting the next Lexie Starr book in this series.

Enjoyed the book. Look forward to further from this author. However, I will no longer be reading reviews on B&N. I'll check books out on Amazon & elsewhere due to the idiot reviewers who give away way too much of the story. I refer chiefly to Harriet -why don't you get a life woman and stop doing to the books the rest of us want to read? Get a clue. You must be completely deaf and dumb if you don't realize how many folks you've ticked off. It's completely selfish of you to give away the story and I believe you do it for the negative attention it gives you. I'll never understand why B & N doesn't ban you from posting. You need to get a life! I won't be back B & N til someone tells me she's out of here-for good. Bye bye.

LOVE THIS HUMOROUS SERIES! Lexie's spunky character is easy to relate to, and her devil-may-care attitude provides a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. No stone unturned

I agree with the 13 year old reviewer. This book is written on a child's level. Similar to Nancy Drew but not as good. Fast paced because no character development, except for referrals to television characters such as Sponge Bob and Barny Fife, dialect from the Beverly Hillbillies and classic cliches from well known movies.

    Fast-paced

Very fast-paced. Lexie Starr and Stone Van Patten are likeable enough characters. Harriet rocked!

    A few small mistakes:
    1. People not using an Adirondack trail or even animal path or footpath due to stinging nettles is not realistic. Folks around here are far more rugged than that. Better reason not to use a trail much might be because the ADKers have convinced people that trails not leading up to one of the high peaks aren't worthwhile. Another might be that only or mostly locals hike there.

    2. Schizophrenia the word is derived from a word meaning "split brain" however schizophrenia the condition is entirely separate from having "multiple personalities".

    3. The best social engineering would not get a stranger in to see Wanda.

    4. If it was described as intensive supportive apartments with staff on-site (with their own apartment 'office') that would have been more believable and in line with the residential services available "10 miles south of Schenectady" than a "home for the mentally ill."

    5. Said intensive supportive apartments could have been placed in Albany and been realistic there (as the first Albany exit is approximately 10 miles from the Schenectady exit on 90 South.

    6. Wanda's actions could also have been those of a schizophrenic woman who was elderly AND now also suffering from early-onset Alzheimer's. Her placement in an apartment for the elderly with on-site staff supervision would have fit then. Think: Kingsway Arms off of the Crosstown (route 7 east in Schenectady) would have been believable.

    7. NYS is full of democratic politicians who prefer the labels "mental health challenges" or " behavioral disorders/health" to the more direct words "mentally ill". Services in NYS have not referenced the words "mentally ill" here in several decades.

    8. I'm fairly sure this state hasn't had a death penalty in years.

    9. Schenectady has been a dirty city for many years. This holds true of the Union Street area as well as the slummier sections of town. Actually, I was amused at Schenectady being described as a clean city. The resident insect is the cockroach.

Not a mistake but an observation: Lexie uses some 12 step specific jargon throughout the book along with a few Christian phrases. Since the useage is marked, it would be believable for Lexie to be an out of the closet Christian in recovery from alcoholism. She could be a member of either AA or Overcomers Anonymous in good standing. Stone, being a Christian southern gentleman would either not drink because of his religious beliefs or in solidarity with Lexie's desire to stay sober.

If you didn't mean for Lexie or Stone to be Christian, then the recovery jargon and religious expressions should be omitted in future books.

    Good points:
    *Very little cursing.
*Suitable for use by adults in literacy programs.
*If a teen or a child get a hold of this book, their parents don't have to shudder in horror.
*No poorly written sex scenes in this book-- no sex scenes at all.
*An absence of zombies, the paranormal, and dark urban atmosphere.
*The characters were interesting and seemed like folks I've met.

Thanks to the author for promoting organ donation. I am glad you have survived your ordeal and are now thriving.

NOTICE TO REVIEWERS! This is a fun to read and terrific novel, the first one of a great cozy series.  All of you posting 1-star reviews to vent,, or voice your opinions, about something other than the actual book you're supposed to be rating and reviewing, are doing nothing but selflessly hurting the writing career of the author. Jeanne Glidewell doesn't deserve this kind of thoughtless behavior . Please read the book and give an honest review of it, not damage the author's reputation by posting 1-star reviews to complain about other reviewers, or reviewing policies, or saying you don't know if you'll like it or not because you haven't read it yet. Really?  A book you've never read deserves a 1-star rating?  It's not fair to the writer, or to readers like me who want to be able to trust the rating system to know what books I might enjoy reading.  I know I greatly enjoyed LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED, and highly recommend other readers who enjoyed this book to post honest reviews of it for the sake of the author and other readers.

There are many other well written and inspiring cozy mysteries out there, don't waste your time on this series. It is unfortunate the writer makes so many rude and very frequent references to heavy set people in her books. It is distracting and not a part of her plots. Her writing isn't strong enough to carry through something like that which is unrelated to the plot. I wouldn't recommend these to people of any age. Maybe if she'd hit readers over the head with a character obsessed with eating well and exercising (which she doesn't mention) it could have gotten her bias across to readers. I'm glad I got her first book Free, I did buy her second book, hoping it wouldn't be of the same ilk, but it was. Browsing the 3rd book out of curiosity, the plot was much weaker and didn't seem to flow, but she didn't insult anyone (a non-plot related lady next to her at the dentist) until page 30.
