::::ABOUT THE BOOK
"His path was laden with possibilities and pitfalls, cheers and criticism, laughter and lamenting.but he arrived at his destination-the NBA-fortified by a solid personal code of honor and academic achievement." -From the Foreword by Nancy Gilliam and M. LaVora Perry

::::Within LeBron James' story are lessons that echo from the years when he and his mother struggled to survive and endure hard choices. These lessons deepened when LeBron's unique basketball skills became apparent, drawing national media attention to him and the small Catholic high school he attended. As he conquered the high school arena and set his sights on the pros, LeBron faced his share of naysayers and skeptics, but he silenced all doubters with his stellar rookie performance during his first NBA season as a multi-million dollar draft pick for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Through it all, LeBron stayed true to himself. Despite phenomenal wealth and fame, the lessons he learned as a young player will hopefully always remain with him, keeping him focused and grounded on his way to perhaps becoming one of the best-and classiest-athletes to ever play the game.

WARM-UP
For years millions of youngsters have wanted to be "like Mike," as they donned jerseys and t-shirts with #23 on the back and pretended to be their sports hero on dusty outdoor courts, gymnasium floors, urban playgrounds and backyard hoops all over America. Michael Jordan was without peer-the epitome of every youngster's basketball ideal. He did things on the basketball court that defied logic and explanation, plus he possessed smooth looks, a winning smile and was a smart, savvy business mogul, to boot. No one-in professional basketball before or since-has ever quite been "like Mike."Now comes a young man who many think will some day ascend to Michael's throne-apparently with the Great One's blessing. He wore #23 on his high school jersey as he mesmerized fans with lightning quick dunks, flashy behind the back, under the leg, and sideways no-look slashes and passes and an array of dazzling jumpers and left-handed scoop shots. He too, has an infectious, winning smile. Little wonder that many predict the day will soon come when millions of youngsters playing in gyms and parks in urban areas across the country will exclaim, "I want to be like 'Bron.'""Bron" is short for LeBron James, who sports aficionados have forecast as the next basketball sports megastar. During his four years playing high school ball he reigned supreme as the best player in the nation among high school hoopsters.At 18, LeBron stood 6 foot, 8 inches tall and weighed 240 pounds as an senior at St. Vincent-St.-Mary high school in Akron, Ohio. In the spring of 2003, most of his classmates were preparing for their SAT's and perfecting their college essays. Come September they would be sitting in college classrooms, sharing dorm rooms, attending toga parties and signing up for fraternities. But LeBron would not spend time on a college campus-at least not any time soon. Instead, he would become the #1 pick in the 2003 NBA draft. The Cleveland Cavaliers, a needy NBA team that won only 17 games during the 2002-2003 season, hoped to cement its future by making LeBron their number one draft pick. The rookie-to-be would receive a salary in the $11 million range. This amount is dwarfed by the $100 million that Nike would pay him to put his name on a line of basketball shoes and perform flamboyant moves in commercials sketched out on drawing boards inside sleek corporate offices. How did LeBron, born in 1984 to 16-year-old Gloria, become the best high school player in the land? How did he go from the days where he and his mom lived in a building that was later condemned to contemplating buying his mom whatever house she desires and her own set of wheels for the driveway? How did LeBron manage to see the dream he had in the fifth grade of going to the NBA (according to ESPN The Magazine, his teacher told him his dream was "crazy") become a reality? How did he end up playing for one of the major Catholic schools in the northeast and wind up having a high school career unlike any player before him? How did he become the exemplary young fellow he is today? These and other questions will be answered in this tale of a young man's life-a life that was forever altered due to his prowess with a round ball. His story is poignant and unforgettable-and, in many ways, it's just beginning.
