Children's LiteratureThis book is part of the "High Five Reading" series and is full of pictures of LeBron James, an outstanding NBA player. This player overcame many obstacles in order to be successful. James showed natural talent with his first basketball at the age of three. However, drugs, violence, and poverty made his life unstable. Many people wanted to help him because he was so determined; he went to live with his coach in the fifth grade and learned discipline. He developed friendships based on respect and trust. James and his team won many tournaments and titles together. Sports Illustrated featured him while he was still in high school. The Ohio High School Athletic Association suspended James for a few games because of suspicious actions. He accepted the blame and went on to be the first pick in the 2003 NBA draft. He played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and was Rookie of the Year. James' story is inspiring and is valuable for teaching children to work hard and stay focused even when things get difficult. This book is well organized with a "Table of Contents," "Epilogue," "Glossary," "Bibliography," "Useful Addresses," "Internet Sites," and an "Index." Vocabulary words are in bold and are defined at the bottom of the page. A thoughtful question at the end of each chapter leads easily into the next topic. 2006, Red Brick Learning, Ages 8 to 12.
