Reviewer: Charles E. Edmiston, Jr., PhD (Medical College of Wisconsin)
Description: This is a concise review of the field of medical microbiology and infectious diseases. The text is divided into two major areas: basic medical microbiology (bacteriology, virology, and parasitology) and infectious diseases (anti-infectives and disease-specific chapters).
Purpose: It has been targeted for a broad range of health professionals, including medical, dental, and undergraduate microbiology and pharmacy students. By author intent, the book has a specific focus for medical students in the United Kingdom who will be taking the FRCS and MRCP examinations.
Audience: Although the authors have suggested that the intended audience includes physicians, it is unlikely that this would be viewed as a primary review text for them. Although the authors review a broad range of topics in medical microbiology and infectious diseases, the discussions are superficial and there is no cited documentation (references) in the text. This is a serious omission, because the text provides no further sources for additional readings.
Features: The numerous illustrations and tables may be helpful in understanding the information.
Assessment: This is a third edition of a text that was originally published in 1975. The authors were ambitious in the amount of information they wished to cover. However, much of it is superficial and limited in scope. This book is most appropriate as a companion text for undergraduate students in the allied health sciences. It is unlikely that this would be used as a major review text for graduate healthcare students or medical students preparing to take their board examinations. One of the major faults of this text is that it provides no references or suggested readings. In addition, it provides only a cursory discussion of current problems associated with antimicrobial resistance (such as penicillin-resistant pneumococci, VRE, MRSA, and MDR-TB), which should be a major focus in any review material on infectious diseases. This book should be viewed, at best, as a possible tertiary reference text.
From the Publisher
"...the presentation in this book is excellent. And there's also an 'organism index' at the back as well as a subject index."
Surgo, Glasgow University Medical Journal

"I have found this book to be a very handy reference guide, all main topics are covered and are in an easy-to-read style.

This book is particularly suited to students who need a good introduction to medical microbiology, and also to those working in healthcare professions who may use this book as a quick reference material.

Clear and detailed pictures can be found on the photographic plates, which are another bonus.

As a recently graduated student soon to enter the field of medical microbiology I have found this book an invaluable revision and reference guide. Both being concise enough but also with enough detail to satisfy." Reviewer, Amazon.co.uk
