All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Led Zeppelin had a fully formed, distinctive sound from the outset, as their eponymous debut illustrates. Taking the heavy, distorted electric blues of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Cream to an extreme, Zeppelin created a majestic, powerful brand of guitar rock constructed around simple, memorable riffs and lumbering rhythms. But the key to the group's attack was subtlety: it wasn't just an onslaught of guitar noise, it was shaded and textured, filled with alternating dynamics and tempos. As Led Zeppelin proves, the group was capable of such multi-layered music from the start. Although the extended psychedelic blues of "Dazed and Confused," "You Shook Me," and "I...

As Led Zeppelin proves, the group was capable of such multi-layered music from the start. Although the extended psychedelic blues of "Dazed and Confused," "You Shook Me," and "I Can't Quit You Baby" often gather the most attention, the remainder of the album is a better indication of what would come later. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" shifts from folky verses to pummeling choruses; "Good Times Bad Times" and "How Many More Times" have groovy, bluesy shuffles; "Your Time Is Gonna Come" is an anthemic hard rocker; "Black Mountain Side" is pure English folk; and "Communication Breakdown" is a frenzied rocker with a nearly punkish attack. Although the album isn't as varied as some of their later efforts, it nevertheless marked a significant turning point in the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal.

    RIGHT OFF THE BAT!!!!!

It's very rare that you find a band that figures out their perfect style of music for their first album. But Led Zeppelin is the epitome of this, and this album is a gem, with such classics as "Good Times Bad Times," "Communication Breakdown," and "Dazed and Confused," "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You," and my favorite track of the album "How Many More Times." I'd deffinately rank this in the top five of the greatest of albums of all time. If your just starting to become a Led Zeppelin fan and wondering what albums to get, look below.

    The birth of brilliance.

This was one of those very rare moments in music history in which an album had arrived that clearly defied any immediate categorization. With their very first effort, the mighty Zeppelin created a recording of unprecedented power and excitement. Such was the brilliance of this music that it dramatically altered and then dominated rock music to this very day. As is so often the case with the arrival of unique artistic genius, many critics missed the boat on Zeppelin. They initially panned the unfamiliar sound, only to eat large quantities of humble pie eventually. Led Zeppelin never forgave Rolling Stone magazine for what are now, in retrospect, astonishingly ignorant and hostile reviews. Zeppelin's music is now so universally respected and revered that R.S. magazine is reduced these days to damning with faint praise. They continually slight Zeppelin in their greatest 'whatever' lists, most recently their ludicrous '500 greatest albums' list. Only the Beatles are in Zeppelin's league in terms of influence and popularity, however the Beatles never approached the dynamic skill, excitement, and musical dexterity that Led Zeppelin routinely displayed in their magical concerts. To this very day Led Zeppelin's first album puts to shame nearly all other rock music. Do yourself a favor and buy this landmark cd.

Do I Really Need To Say Anything?

This is it.... the granddaddy, the one that started it all, the one that has influenced more musicians than problably any another single album out there just on Side A alone. From end to end 40+ minutes of sheer melodic and sonic delight. The lyrics, the sounds all pure genuis. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. Four guys that would change music history forever and it all started here.

    WOW!

Simply amazing. I'm only fifteen, but classic rock is my favorite type of music and Zeppelin is one of the greatest bands ever- hands down. Their debut album does not showcase the original sound that Led Zeppelin would develop over their next few albums, but it was still very inovative for rock and roll. No one had ever sang like Plant and the music was the heaviest ever. At first I did'nt like the more bluesy tracks but I soon learned to love them. My favorite song on the album is definitely "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You". Next would have to be "Dazed and Confused" and "Good Times, Bad Times". Long Live Zeppelin.

Everyone should recognize the greatness of Led Zeppelin

There is a simple fact that eludes critics and reviews about Led Zeppelin: simpatico. What Zeppelin manifested in "Led Zeppelin" were not only great covers and originals, but rhythmic, chordal "tightness" and a brilliant understanding of time and meter. Each member of Zeppelin enhanced the collective music: Robert Plant's wailing, Jimmy Page's soloing, John Paul Jones' grooves, and John Bonham's incomparable "feel." Each track in "Led Zeppelin" showcased individual talents: "Good Times Bad Times" displayed Bonham's inhuman bass drum triplets, "Dazed and Confused" revealed Page's innovation of bow soloing, "Your Time is Gonna Come" supplanted Jones' multi-instrumental ability, and "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" rendered Plant folky, yet powerfully emotive. Zeppelin's legacy and virtuosity are both timeless and unparalleled.

    Wiped out all over again!

It had been some years since Id listened to the whole album/cd, and when I purchased it recently, It sent chills down my spine, even now. I always have thought of one word for it...Power. Nobody can ever sound like Robert Plant did back then, try as they might-still, and Jimmy Page ,JPJ and Bonzo are fantastic. I cant even imagine what it must have been like to hear it brand new when it first came out back then. It just reaffirms why I love The Mighty Zep so much. Long-time fans would enjoy a listen again, and new fans should start here to see where it all started. Exellent!

    Good Songs Bad Songs

It is hard to decide is this just rock 'n'roll, hard rock, or heavy rock. Some tracks like 'Communication Breakdown' and 'Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You' are cenrtainly at least hard rock but 'I Can't Quit You Baby', 'Good Times Bad Times', 'Your Time Is Gonna Come' etc. are much more near original rock. This album is very good for a debut album. The best tracks are definitely 'Good Times Bad Times', 'Communication Breakdown', and very popular live track 'Dazed And Confused'. The only tracks that are too lousy for their vocals are 'I Can't Quit You Baby' and 'You Shook Me'.

    VISIONARY AND FULL OF SOUL!

These guys bet their lives on this album. I mean they gave everything they had to give and because of that here I am writing about this album 33 years later. How many more times am I gonna listen to this album? Maybe it's an eternal love affair, till death do us part thing,I don't know, it`s to weird to figure it out. I think it´s the sincerity begun by most of the greatest artist, and the fact that there wasn´t much of it at the time,it was a continuation of the evolution of things. It had to happen.I can sincerly say that this album made me very happy in my teenage years with all the family problems I had to go through, it made me believe there was a purpose to all that happend. It also helped me spiritually. I believe in Jesus!

    best zeppelin album

This may or may not be the best zep album ever, but it certainly had a huge impact on a 16-year old listener in 1968. The Willie Dixon tunes (You Shook Me and I Can't Quit You Baby)blew me away as did zep's own blues (dazed and confused) and their own take on first rate rock and roll (communcation Breakdown). This is without a doubt one of the three or four greatest albums of all time. 9

Photograph of a powerful young band

This debut album is essentially a rough blueprint for all of the textured, light-and-shade mayhem that Led Zeppelin would go on to create. It encompasses pop hooks ('Good Times Bad Times'), speed-rock attacks ('Communication Breakdown'), atmospheric folk ('Your Time Is Gonna Come'), and blunt heavy metal ('Dazed and Confused'). Here they are still borrowing quite a bit from other sources, and their own sound isn't as developed as on some later efforts. Nevertheless, this is a great and resounding record that may actually be superior to the (more famous) second album.

    I Also Recommend:

    The Blueprint Album

Led Zeppelin's frist 4 albums are considered blueprints for heavy metal that would soon follow. Page's guitar riffs and John's drumming were way ahead of their when this album was released in 1968.
Pros: There are 3 things that make this album legendary. 1.Jimmy Page's amazing guitar riffs and solos just blew me away, however i seemed to have recognized some of the melodys even though i never heard a track on this album before i listened to it in its entirety. 2.John's drumming, the drums are loud and clear in this record and only add to the energy when put with Jimmy's guitar parts. 3.Robert"s vocals, even though Plant did'nt write any lyrics for this album, he sang each song swiftly like a true poet. His vocals would get better with each new Zeppelin album.
Cons: There a few 6 minute songs on hear that tend to drag on. Otherwise no complaints.
Overall: I could relate to songs like "Good Times,Bad Times" and "Dazed and Confused". Zeppelin's 1st album is not perfect, but it was a great stater for what would come later.
