All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Led Zeppelin's primary method of artistic expression was their albums. Although they had a handful of hit singles and although selected album tracks were played endlessly on the radio, the true range of their music is only evident on the original albums, which were carefully sequenced and assembled. Consequently, the notion of a Led Zeppelin anthology is a bit strange -- their records worked as individual pieces. Nevertheless, the four-disc box set Led Zeppelin includes most of their best and most famous material. Jimmy Page determined the set's running order, taking the songs out of their familiar contexts and placing them in a new, occasionally jarring, ...

Nevertheless, the four-disc box set Led Zeppelin includes most of their best and most famous material. Jimmy Page determined the set's running order, taking the songs out of their familiar contexts and placing them in a new, occasionally jarring, sequence, providing new insights to the band's music that dedicated fans will appreciate. Led Zeppelin is the only album in their catalog to include the classic B-side "Hey Hey What Can I Do," as well as their unreleased version of Robert Johnson's "Travelling Riverside Blues" and a live medley of Page's "White Summer/Black Mountain Side." Most fans will find these three tracks essential, but will balk at the price, especially since all of Zeppelin's albums have been remastered since the original release of the box set. While the box contains a wealth of brilliant music, all of it is better heard in its original incarnation.

Warning to the would-be box set buyer

As noted in the All-Music guide review above, Led Zeppelin were a fantastic album band. Each of their albums works like a well-written novel, juxtaposing styles and sounds into a collage-like whole. Most of the good tracks are included on this box set, but in a totally different format - a bit like reading chapters from different novels out of order. Also, some key tracks are actually missing, such as 'Good Times Bad Times', 'The Lemon Song', 'The Rover', and 'Tea For One'. Which means that one has to eventually buy Box Set 2 to make up the difference; and altogether, listening to the material in its original format is probably a better experience, especially if you start with the first album and move from there.

    What's not to love?

Does Led Zeppelin have a bad album? I finally broke down and bought this compilation. I am very glad I did!

Get this plus 'Box Set 2' and you'll have all the studio Led Zeppelin there is

Between the 'Led Zeppelin' 4CD box and the 2CD 'Box Set 2', you can get all the studio Led Zeppelin there is (from their eight original studio albums released 1969 - 1979), which is good since it takes six CDs to get it all. I took this route, and figured on making playlists and CD-Rs of the actual albums sequencing the appropriate tracks. However, if you do the 'two box sets' thing, be warned - certain track segueing like "Your Time is Gonna Come" into "Black Mountain Side" (from the 1st album), and "Friends" into "Celebration Day" (from LZ III) will not sound like the original album since on the box sets, the tracks either fade out or segue into different songs. If you're a purist in the album sense, it makes more sense to shell out for 'The Complete Studio Recordings'. If that's not of any consequence, get both the four and two disc boxes and enjoy!

    GREATEST BAND EVER

I am a huge Zeppelin fan, I can play most of their stuff on guitar (especially Black Dog, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, and Communication Breakdown). This box set is all encompassing of the Led Zeppelin legacy. All of the best songs are on the cd's and this set was worth every penny.

    NEXT GENERATIONER

Hey! Thanks first off for reading my review! Me being of this generation---youth you would not think that I would enjoy good music like Zepplin. Quite the Contrary. I love Zepplin and grew up on their music so I was greatly in joy when I heard of this boxed set with all kinds of their songs good and bad ( although in my opinion just about all are good) I highly recommend this set and the band themselves. The boxed set although is pricey so I would just as soon recommend any of their other seperate albums. Bye!

The best there is. No questions asked

I was never a led zep fan until my stepfather got me into it by playing the first album of theirs for me. now i'm hooked and have over two thirds of their cds. as a drummer(like the late great John Bonham) i feel a special bond to this music. led zep is for all ages and creeds. no boundaries, no limits

    mmm zeppelin...

excellent overview of some of zeppelin's best. great for the casual zeppelin fan, perfect if you add to it the supplemental boxed set that includes the hits this one inadvertantly left out (i.e. livin lovin maid), and the bbc sessions. i've had it for a couple of years now and it still gives me hours of warm fuzzy early metal entertainment.

As the best ROCK band ever how can't this get a 5?

It is true that the fourth disk isn't as good as the first three, but that is only because Led-Zeppelin put out so many incredible songs. The only losses I felt were the order of the first 3 tracks off of Zeppelin III, and the transition from Living Loving Maid. But the three new songs more than make up for it. Travelling Riverside Blues (which is now on BBC Sessions) and Hey, Hey What Can I do (always on Classic Rock stations) are the things you get as a bonus, not to mention the Black Mountain medley thing. The third disk is best, and yes you will wind up buying the second boxed set to complete the series, so factor that into your financial calculations. Just buy the two boxed sets and you'll be finished, or the complete recordings (but this is cheaper I believe, and you get more new songs). As I am only 19, album rock doesn't really mean that much to me, so this is just fine for fans of rock music.

This is Zeppelin at their best.

Jimmy Page, in my view the best guitarist/ producer ever, went out to make a composite of the band's 10 albums. He came up with this boxed set which makes Zeppelin music timeless. I play each cd straight through and each song is a classic definition of pure heart and soul in music.
