Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description: This is an overview and synthesis of professional concepts that are basic to the development of the professional nurse.
Purpose: The purpose of the first edition of this book was to assist RNs "in baccalaureate nursing education to become re-socialized in the full professional role." However, the authors now believe "it can be a resource to all nursing education programs."
Audience: The book would be appropriate for student nurses, recent graduates, and practicing nurses.
Features: The 23 chapters are grouped into four sections covering an exploration of professional nursing, the changing healthcare context, professional nursing roles, and the future of professional nursing. There is an update on the history of healthcare insurance in the United States as well as information on the Mexican and Canadian healthcare systems. Information on nursing management and leadership has been expanded and there is a new chapter on the quality improvement process. Vignettes based on real life experiences and reflection questions are included in each chapter. Internet exercises and Internet resources listed at the end of each chapter help the nurse link content to professional practice. The majority of the chapters also contain research briefs.
Assessment: This book contains information on a multitude of professional topics, but what is really helpful and interesting are the chapter questions for reflection as well as the Internet exercises. Each chapter could stand alone and the discussion questions could be used in class or online. The Internet exercises are very timely and provide enhanced information in a fun way. The vignettes add real-world scenarios that a professional nurse encounters in practice, and helps the nurse identify ways to handle these situations. This is a valuable book to help the nurse grow in professionalism in dealing with today's changing and very complex healthcare arena.
