Overview

Four new worship tracks are the highlight of this musical companion to the latest Left Behind book release, The Remnant. This hugely successful series of Christian thrillers is set during a future Armageddon as described in the Biblical Book of Revelation and tackles such themes as the Antichrist, the Second Coming and redemption for the faithful. God Is With Us, its musical counterpart, spends most of the time focusing on the latter topic, with a recap of modern worship hits: Sonicflood's ubiquitous "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever," Matt Redman's "Better Is One Day," and the de rigeur "God of Wonders" (though choosing Rebecca St. James' version off her recent Worship: God release is refreshing.) More interesting are the new tracks: The Benjamin Gate's exquisite Adrienne Leisching tempers her punk-rock snarl to match the worshipful temperament of "In Christ Alone"; joined with Geoff Moore and backed by Celtic flutes, it creates a singular statement of faith that stands head and shoulders above the competition. Jill Phillips, whose ethereal vocals are reminiscent of Twila Paris, turns in a nicely uplifting acoustic track with "Forever and Ever." As a musical reminder that God is indeed with us, this collection does its job nicely. But note to the producers: if they don't want to be left behind Christian music's most progressive new wave, the series could stand to broaden its perspective.
