Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
One of the "True Tales of Survival" series, this book tells the story of fifty-year-old Lincoln Hall, an experienced mountain climber who was left for dead by his Sherpa team when he became hypoxic and hypothermic after reaching the summit of Mt. Everest in 2006. Although he had no food, water, or most importantly, extra oxygen, Lincoln recovered consciousness sometime during the night and, not strong enough to attempt a descent, did make efforts to keep himself alive. He was discovered by other climbers early the next morning who then gave up their own attempt at the summit to carry Lincoln down to safety. He was seriously frostbitten but, unlike many who have tried to climb Everest, he survived the experience. The book includes some information about high altitude climbing. The text, three or four paragraphs per double-page spread, is accompanied by color photographs, some generic mountain climbing scenes, but others specifically of Lincoln and his expedition. The book includes a table of contents, an index, a short list of other recommended titles, a link to Internet resources through the publisher, and a glossary. Although not an essential purchase for most libraries, the topic may attract reluctant readers who will enjoy an exciting survival tale. Reviewer: Leslie Rounds
