Children's Literature - Laura Backman
Emma loves to march around. Sensing her enthusiasm her teacher, Miss Cathy, invites her to lead the school's marching band for Grandparents' Day. Emma wants to do her best, but is unsure of which foot is her left foot and which foot is her right foot. Miss Cathy and her friends are there to help. Her teacher even ties a piece of red string on Emma's right wrist for a visual aid. She keeps practicing at home and on the day of the big event, Emma does not even need the string anymore. She does an excellent job of leading the rest of her peers. Murphy, an author and visual learning specialist, presents this story using simple, repetitive text and color coded illustrations to help children remember which side is left and which side is right. The Closer Look section at the back offers practice exercises for left and right awareness as does the simple map in the front. This title, part of the "I See I Learn" series, presents left and right cognitive skills in a picture book that is well suited for the pre-school and kindergarten classroom. After several reads, young audiences will be motivated to learn this important concept. Reviewer: Laura Backman
