LEFTY is a comic portrait of the changing South, where strip malls, planned developments, and Yankee relocation threaten the sense of community. The very notion of being connected to something larger--nature, God, even Wal-Mart--is at risk. "Lefty" Calvin and his quirky crew careen through this hilarious and touching tale of odd loves and peculiar loyalties.

I came South in 1988 from the Northeast. So much of what I read in Lefty brought back those early memories of first being in Chapel Hill, NC and environs. Much of it rings true. Ralph Hardy does a great job of capturing Southern humor as I know it. For me, there was much chuckling while reading Lefty. Yes, it is true - I still see 'Lefty' around town and I am glad he didn't leave. Lord knows he should have, with the way folks have been behaving around here these days. Was this review helpful?
