Library Journal - Library JournalBenet I Jornet is today's most popular Catalonian playwright. His Legacy explores the complex relationship between a terminally ill professor and his most brilliant and beautiful male student, who, it turns out when the professor answers a sex ad, is also a prostitute. Their relationship is further complicated by the professor s discovery that his student is responsible for the pregnancy of the daughter of the professor s best friend. Obsessed with having no son of his own, the professor gives the student the only copy of his sole legacy his final work of scholarship while urging him to accept responsibility for his unborn child. These intertwined relationships and the themes of heritage and responsibility are dramatized in scenes of raw anger, passion, and exploitative sex. A chorus of offstage voices marks the drama s beginning, end, and scene transitions, further adding to the play s impact. Legacy has been made into the successful film Beloved/Friend (1998), directed by Ventura Pons. Recommended for modern drama collections.
