They quickly discover that the locals will not be easily beaten. In the heat of battle Lysander finds himself in front of the great statue in the main square, and is shocked to see that the figure is wearing the Fire of Ares. Is this Lysander’s ancestor? He must find out his connection to this town and its people, and in so doing reveal more of his mysterious heritage, hidden from him for so long.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Julia Beiker
The young hero, Lysander, feels as if he has let his fellow soldiers down, as well as himself. He yanks off a special pendant, called Fire of Ares, (which had been in his family for generations) from around his neck. It has cursed him instead of leading him to the answers that he desires. Where has he come from? What will be his destiny? He hands over the cursed treasure to his best comrade, Demaratos for safe keeping until the day he earns it back…with honors. At last, his chance arrives. A troop is needed to travel a great distance and take back land for Sparta. Unfortunately, his troop consists of young soldiers like himself. At least, his commander is a seasoned warrior. The journey takes weeks and gives them time to recognize the dangers that lay ahead of them. Do these young boys have what it takes to become men? Both their physical and mental abilities are tested to the limit. Not everyone will return, and Lysander will finally learn the secret to his birthright. Does he figure it out in time? The author takes readers to a realistic war zone, but adds several touches of magic to heighten the suspense. Because this is a book about war, several scenes do depict killing, but sometimes the visual imagery left me wondering why they would behave like that. Even though all the elements for a suspenseful book exist in this tale, it lacks twists and turns, making the plot feel transparent. This book is part of the "Spartan Quest" series. Gr 5–8—After seeking the advice of the Oracle of Delphi, he returns to Sparta to find the Council of Elders ready to send the boys from his barracks off to take back the invaded colony of Taras. Lysander is sure that he will find his destiny there. In the end, he discovers where he came from and that Spartans are not so different from him. Though the story can be read on its own, frequent references to happenings in past books makes reading the series in order a better choice. Those with weak stomachs should be forewarned of the sometimes graphic violence as Ford goes into great detail during the battle scenes. For the most part, however, his attention to detail enhances this story with historical context, painting a vivid and accurate picture of life in ancient Sparta. An exciting, bloody adventure, but also a solid piece of historical fiction.—Clare A. Dombrowski, Amesbury Public Library, MA
