Overview

This hastily recorded collection of hymns, Amy Grant's first overtly religious record since Lead Me On in 1988, hit stores a few months before her first major original release in five years. The timing inevitably prompted speculation that Grant was attempting to win back conservative fans who were disenchanted by her 1997 divorce from Christian songwriter Gary Chapman and 1998 marriage to secular country star Vince Gill. But ultimately it doesn't matter whether Grant was, as she claimed, celebrating the 25th year of her recording career by returning to her roots or, as her detractors charged, shoring up her right-wing base like a Republican in primary season. What matters is the music, which is remarkably polished and skillfully arranged considering that it was put together in only 29 days. Actually, it may be a little too polished. Grant's two producers, Gill and Brown Bannister, aimed for an old-time folk sound that they hoped would underscore the timelessness of these turn-of-the-century hymns and tap into the contemporary fascination with bluegrass projects like the Grammy-winning O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. The approach is especially winning on the tracks where it is applied most purely, like "Fairest Lord Jesus," a guitar and fiddle jam with harmony vocals from O Brother alum Alison Krauss, and "Fields of Plenty/Be Still My Soul," which features a gorgeously unadorned classical guitar solo by Richard Bennett. But the producers often coat a glossy pop shellac atop the raw, acoustic foundation that sometimes threatens to compromise the integrity of their efforts. But the candid spiritual tone of Grant's three original compositions, particularly "What You Already Own," might justifiably be taken as confirmation of the sincerity of her intentions -- pop gloss and public scandal notwithstanding. [The expanded edition includes a brief DVD making-of documentary that features glimpses of studio sessions and interviews with Grant, who talks about what the hymns have meant to her, and her producers, who talk about what Amy has meant to them. The gist? She still loves God.]
