Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Lena L Watson, Dr. RN, MBA/HCM(University of Phoenix)
Description: Similar to the ninth edition published in 2004, this tenth edition is a comprehensive resource for up-to-date information on healthcare law and its key administrative elements.
Purpose: The purpose is two-fold. First, the book fundamentally introduces readers to how and when the law intersects with healthcare. Second, it explains healthcare providers' legal areas of responsibility. These are vital objectives because healthcare is in a perpetual state of evolution. The book meets the objectives, offering practical approaches to healthcare law.
Audience: The author indicates this is suitable as a course textbook and a reference for practitioners. In addition, it is appropriate for a much broader audience, including risk managers, healthcare administrators, consultants, healthcare scholars, legal nurse consultants, case manager/discharge planners, utilization review managers, quality managers, healthcare project managers, bioethicists, healthcare auditors, and healthcare attorneys. The author has established himself as a trusted expert in the healthcare field and he is a Joint Commission surveyor, president of his own consulting firm, educator, and scholar.
Features: The book covers a wide range of healthcare law topics, including: a historical and structural overview of hospitals and the judicial system governing healthcare; legal aspects of healthcare delivery challenging healthcare professionals; past and present healthcare ethical practices and standards; federal and state healthcare case law and regulatory mandates; information management , security, and confidentiality; informed consent and patient self-determination; managed care and organizational restructuring; current healthcare employment case law practices and strategies; and future recommendations. This book is reader-friendly, using a format with a logical flow. Most chapters begin with a court case, giving readers an opportunity to apply theory and practical knowledge. At the end of the chapters are court findings, reasoning, and summaries for each case in a box titled "The Court's Decision." In addition to case law practical applications, the conclusion of most chapters includes a chapter review and review questions. A comprehensive glossary section with key healthcare law-related terms and definitions appears at the end of the book. One of the many unique features is the associated Web site with additional resources. There are few diagrams and illustrations, but the substantive content makes up for any of the perceived shortcomings. In keeping with previous editions, this is an invaluable addition to the body of literature in healthcare law.
Assessment: Like the previous editions, this handy, easy-to-read reference is a practical, at-your-fingertips resource that concisely explains key issues and elements of the legal aspects of healthcare administration. The information is reliably accurate and objective. Once again, this edition rightfully deserves a permanent place on the bookshelves of today's healthcare innovators, thinkers, scholars, learners, and leaders.

VERY upset with my order! I ordered one edition (and it shows on my account the one I ordered) and I was shipped another. I was only told to print a return shipping label and send it back. This was 2 days before my class was to start and they would not pay to rush order the correct one nor could they say for sure that it would be the correct one either. I will not order anything from here again and I would not recommend anyone else. Customer Service was polite however not helpful at all.
