Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Nicholas Greco IV, MS, BCETS, CATSM (Columbia College of Missouri)
Description: This is the sixth edition of the American College of Legal Medicine's book that explores the legal implications of medical practice as well as the special legal issues surrounding managed care. This is a truly exhaustive compendium for medical legal issues.
Purpose: The purpose is to update and substantially expand upon the previous edition from 50 chapters to 75 chapters. The book is successful in providing more knowledge on relevant legal concepts, principles, and rules. These are worthy objectives considering the litigious environment in which we currently live. The book exceeds objectives and is most useful.
Audience: This is an excellent teaching tool and resource for all healthcare providers and attorneys. In addition, this book can easily find a well-deserved home in any medical or law school. The authors are notable and accomplished members of their respective fields.
Features: What is truly standout are the relevant and current topics such as HIPAA privacy rules, the Human Genome Project, physician profile databases, alternative medicine, healthcare professional impairment, ethical and legal issues of life care planning, electronic records, legal issues of neonates, and legal aspects of bioterrorism. Solid references and a great index make this a genuine resource.
Assessment: Plain and simple - this is a great book! It is highly recommended and a terrific addition to the medical and legal issues arena. Put it on your shelf as the premier reference.
