Overview

A practicing attorney, a university professor, and a professional speaker, David Dempsey explains how to speak with power, passion, and persuasion.

Legally Speaking illustrates how to:

  • Master Stage fright
  • Analyse audience members and adapt a presentation to reach them
  • Create a powerful presentation
  • Utilize pauses, gestures, vocal power, and eye contact to maximize the impact of any message
  • Intensify the power of a presentation with effective visual aids
  • Capitalize on stories and quotations to make points memorable

Attorneys spend countless hours analyzing cases, reviewing facts, deposing witnesses, and drafting briefs and motions. But prevailing in a courtroom and conveying a message in a convincing fashion to judges and juries is far different and requires masterful communication skills.

    Tremendous how-to for any speaker

Dempsey delivers a very practical, how-to approach for anyone that speaks publicly. Legally Speaking is a resource you will continually refer to for ideas, best practices and guidance as you prepare to speak. Don't let the title fool you - this book can be applied to any speaker, not only lawyers.

Legally Speaking Not Just for Lawyers

"Legally Speaking: 40 Powerful Presentation Principles Lawyers Need to Know" is indispensable for anyone who wants to become a more effective communicator. The book's only flaw is the title is far too limiting. This book should be required reading not only in every law school, but also as a public speaking text. It provides excellent guidance for everyone who needs to communicate with small or large groups of people. David Dempsey relies on his experience as a lawyer and public speaker to provide practical advice, invaluable reference sources, and an outstanding collection of quotations. This book is a must read and will become the speaker's companion on the reference bookshelf along with such basics as the dictionary and thesaurus. "Legally Speaking" is replete with excellent examples that are helpful to both novice and veteran communicators. If you want to be better prepared to convince a judge, jury, legislative body, colleagues or other audience about the merits of your position, you should read Mr. Dempsey's book. You're not fully prepared until you've read it. His advice will help you make a more persuasive presentation. I only wish this book had been available over 20 years ago when I began my career as a lawyer and lobbyist.

    Finally Something New

Finally a book on presentation skills that has something new to say. I am constantly reviewing books on the subject since it is both an area of interest and of professional importance. Legally Speaking is easy to read, and chock full of useful techniques and ideas. It could easily be titled ¿Speaking to be HEARD¿. Unfortunately those that could use it the most (attorneys, trainers, speakers) usually think they know it all. Just because you do something for a living doesn¿t mean you are good at it. Ever had a boring professor? I rest my case. This is a must read for anyone, (and especially Attorneys) who must connect with their audience and get their message across. I¿m willing to bet even Rush Limbaugh or Oprah would learn a thing or two. Mr. Dempsey you have hit a home run with Legally Speaking. It is excellent!

Comprehensive Guide to the Basics of Presenting

As an executive speech coach and presentation skills trainer, I recommend the book Legally Speaking. It offers a comprehensive guide to the basics of effective presenting with helpful specifics that apply to the legal profession. The book is well organized, easy to read, and a nice blend of good advice with real-world stories. Helpful resources such as bibliographies and web sites are also included. This book is a good addition to the attorney's professional development library.

Easy to read, easy to understand. A must for any attorney or attorney want to be. Provides the basics of preparing and presenting speeches to juries. In fact, this is a good reference book for any type of public speaking. I highly recommend it. Bennie Black, Attorney.
