Overview

Sander Grant is a giant. He comes from a long line of giant men—cattle ranchers in Dixon, Texas. These men have a tendency to marry small women who can bear only one child, always a son.

And as Sander is soon to learn, he is one of the few remaining descendants of the angels mentioned in the Book of Genesis who procreated with women, thus souring their relationship with God.

God would rather people forget all about these ill-begotten sons of his, so he’s taken to warning Sander by raining hurt on his mother and inflicting their cattle with BSE.

She wrapped herself in a bathrobe and scarf, put her fluffy house slippers on, and walked out the front door. She eased it shut so Dalton didn’t look up and wonder at the foolishness of what she was doing. Snow began to fall. Shattery flakes lit in her red hair, covered freckles on her face and perched on her eyelashes. She walked far enough to allow some privacy, turned her head up and told God she’d come to talk.

“You look here! You will step up and do Your job. Help my man. Are You listening to me?”

    I Also Recommend:

    I love Marc Phillips

When I first read this book and finished that last page, I dropped to my knees and cried. This story is a beautifully written tale, I've actually shared it. When people ask me that question, "well, what's it about?", I have a hard time nut shelling it. But here goes.

It's about a "fe fi fo fum" giant, Sander, whose family line descends from angels and end up in our time in an east Texas town, Dixon, who own a cattle ranch. From here it gets tough to describe. There is lesson in religion, history, the importance of education, preachers, art, cattle ranching, family growth and unity, despair, loads of wit with a Texas twang, a battle with God, misfortune, dead dads talking, pastures, cows, a mom who talks to God herself, BSE, suffering and love. The story is about Sander coming to terms with who he is and where he comes from. The characters are so believable and intertwine so nicely together, I felt I wanted to be related to some of them.

Mr. Phillips has done an outstanding job with this debut novel and I so look forward to reading his next. I love the way he writes in full circle and I may become his number one fan. I highly suggest you read this book. Oh. and I didn't cry because it was sad, I cried because it was that beautiful. What a great story.
