Legendary 1929 Sessions

All Music Guide - Arwulf Arwulf
For more than a quarter-century beginning in 1923, Bert Ambrose led an extraordinarily fine British dance band, churning out a steady stream of records that come across as surprisingly solid so many years after they were made. In 2008, Sounds of Yesteryear released Legendary 1929 Sessions, a chronological sampling that opens on the last day of May and ends with two titles cut on New Year's Eve. 1929 was a particularly good year for this band, which included at that time trumpeter Sylvester Ahola, trombonist Ted Heath, and reedman Danny Polo.
The playlist is peppered with period delights. Sung by Eddie Grossbart, "Dear Little Café" was drawn from Act II of Noël Coward's "Bitter-Sweet"; "Button Up Your Overcoat" was popularized in the states by pop singer and gangster's moll Ruth Etting, and "I Want to Be Bad" has always been identified with baby-talking Betty Boop archetype Helen Kane. For perky numbers like "Tip-Toe Through the Tulips with Me" and "Down on Jollity Farm," Ambrose employed vocalist Lou Abelardo, who would be replaced in February 1930 by Sam Browne. Post-'60s audiences are mainly familiar with "Jollity Farm" as one of the funniest tunes ever recorded by the Bonzo Dog Band, and various data bases even list Neil Innes as the composer. With lyrics invoking cats, dogs, birds, and pigs, "Jollity Farm" may well have inspired Charles Trénet's masterpiece of frivolity, "Boum."
