Legends, Volume 6 profiles outstanding Quarter Horse stallions that have had a significant impact on the breed. These horses and their progeny have dominated several disciplines, including racing, halter, western pleasure, cutting, reining, working cow horse, and barrel racing. From the chapter titled "Peppy San" "As a young man, Gordon B. Howell, breeder of both Peppy San and Mr San Peppy, covered many miles a day in the saddle tending sheep and cattle on a New Mexico ranch. By the late 1950s, thanks to Texas oil leases, Howell was a wealthy man and served on the boards of numerous oil and gas companies. At one meeting in New York, so the story goes, when directors introduced themselves by noting their Ivy League credentials and business accomplishments, Howell proudly announced, "I'm Gordon B. Howell and I graduated from the sixth grade in Encino, New Mexico." With money to indulge in leisure pursuits, Howell turned to horses. He already had a keen eye for conformation, owing to his days spent as a cowhand, and he soon became an expert on pedigrees, as well. "Mr. Howell had been studying race horses and he could recite Thoroughbred pedigrees," said leading Quarter Horse trainer Matlock Rose, who was introduced to Howell in the 1950s. "He didn't know Quarter Horses very well at the time, but he was an intelligent man, and it didn't take him long to figure out what was going on."
