Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joan Vogel
Lego, an abbreviation of two Danish words—“leg godt”—meaning play well, began in a Danish carpenter’s workshop in 1932; and today, Lego is a family-owned, international group dedicated to the development of the child’s imagination through creativity and fun. The quality of their products for 80 years is consistent with the quality of the Chima Official Guide Book. The book is well constructed with a sturdy cover and high quality paper and has colorful, appealing artwork throughout. With a lexile level of 920, it is a suitable read for grades two to five, and has additional appeal because of its presence on Cartoon Network, video games, downloads and available apps. There is a table of contents and overviews of the legend itself, the major tribes, vehicles, weapons, and locations, plus a featured story. Chima’s once idyllic state changed when a violent storm caused a giant mountain to float in the sky and exude the magical liquid CHI. The animals that drank CHI became anthropomorphic, thus exhibiting the strengths and faults of the human character. The CHI must be shared equally and it is managed by the Lions. Chima’s perfect existence changes when the Crocodiles decide they want the CHI for themselves. The adventures pit good against treachery and enforce the strength of friendship, the importance of authority, and the rule of order. Caveats: Some may view this as a long product commercial (124 pages). Some may object to the fighting. Housed in the cover is a mini-figure to assemble, presenting a choking hazard to younger household members. The book, part of the “Legos Legend of Chima” series, is not recommended for school/public libraries or classroom. Reviewer: Joan Vogel; Ages 7 to 10.
