Interviews & Essays

An Interview with Simon Beecroft

How long did you work on this book?

I wrote a book plan in January 2009. Lucasfilm and The LEGO Group approved the book plan in February, and I started writing the manuscript text in March. Through April and May, I made lots of little changes, refining and adding info as the page designs were put together. There were further small changes from Lucasfilm and The LEGO Group. Finally, the finished book went to the printer at the end of May.

There are so many cool minifigures -- which one is your favorite?

I like them all! I love the simplicity of the designs: the way the LEGO® Star Wars® designers capture a character's essence in such an economical way. Particular favorites are Boba Fett, Darth Maul, Luke in X-wing outfit, Han in Hoth parka, TIE pilot, Rebel soldiers with goggles and the new Admiral Ackbar.

Were you a Star Wars fan growing up?

Yep. I saw A New Hope in the cinema in the UK in 1977; I was seven years old. I remember my dad bought me a fold-out poster in the cinema foyer with C-3PO and R2-D2 on it which stayed bluetacked to my bedroom wall for what seemed like my whole childhood! Me and my friends used to play Star Wars in the school playground. We pretended the white lines of the sports court were the Death Star trench and we'd run along them like we were flying X-wings.

How did you organize so much information into one book?

Oh, that's just secret editor's stuff. Though I should perhaps pay tribute to our consultant, Jeremy Beckett, who owns all the sets and photographed many of them for us. That's how we got so many of the sets in the book.

Which LEGO® Star Wars sets are your favorites?

I do love the Death Star set. It features so many details and iconic moments/locations from two movies rolled into one. It looks like great fun to play with! There's loads of vehicles that I especially love -- Slave 1, Luke's X-wing, AT-ATs... And of course the UCS Millennium Falcon.

If you could be one Star Wars character, who would you be?

Chewbacca. He's got a good heart. Or R2-D2 because he's totally loyal and also really single-minded.

Why do you think LEGO® and Star Wars go so well together?

It's the most amazing thing, but I can't really explain it. Maybe because they both work so well on many levels -- they both appeal to kids and older people, and adults, all of whom take from it what they want to.

What was your most memorable experience writing this book?

OK, a few things: Seeing for the first time the new minifigure the LEGO® Star Wars team designed specially for this book. That was a kick! Interviewing Jens Kronvold Frederiksen [design manager for LEGO® Systems] was a great privilege and pleasure. Coming up with the idea for a flip animation on the page corners- - something I've loved in books since I was a kid and always wanted to do in a book of mine. Also realizing how much our designer, Jon Hall, knows about Star Wars and LEGO® Star Wars. It was great working with him: I could ask him tricky or obscure questions and he'd always have an answer.

What was it like interviewing Jens Kronvold Frederiksen on this project? His job sounds so cool!

Jens was very supportive of the project from the start. He was generous with his time when I interviewed him -- we were talking for over an hour. His job is everything I was hoping it would be -- his designers really do come to work and play with LEGO® bricks to design new models; they really do work in a cool environment where even their pen holders are made from LEGO® bricks; his designers are all slightly obsessive Star Wars fans; they really do invite groups of kids in to test whether new models are fun to play with.

Which sets would you like to see LEGO® come out with next?

I'd love to see a full cantina set with some of the aliens or the Bith band. A Wookiee tree house would be cool too. I'm sure there'll be lots of the new vehicles from the Clone Wars TV series: Freeco speeder bikes, Weequay pirate ships etc. And though Jens says they'll never make a Yavin IV set, they've made a rough model (it's in the book) and it would totally work as a set.

    A no-brainer!

If you or your kids (or your spouse!) are in to Legos, and you don't hate Star Wars, this is a no-brainer book to get. The pictures are wonderful, they encompass the entire line of Star Wars Legos, including some 'civilian' creations from Lego clubs and fans from around the world.

It is everything you could hope for in a book like this!

Great for Star Wars and Lego fanatics

My son is a Star Wars fanatic. He was super excited about receiving the book and had it completed within a 24 hour period. I was very pleased to see that there were extra stickers included with the book so he could put them on his sticker wall.

    more from this reviewer

Perfect for your Star Wars Fan!

    * This is a terrifically comprehensive book on the subject of Star Wars lego. * My six year old son is obsessed with this book, poring over the pages himself and asking for it to be read to him constantly. * It is a cool book with a ton of information on Star Wars and Star Wars Lego "guys", another obsession in my house. ___________________________________________________________________ This book is positively captivating my young Star Wars fan - he literally can't get enough of it. The title is very apt, LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary is just that, a visual catalog of Lego Star Wars sets with movie-accurate details filling up every page. While this compendium is set up very logically for a Star Wars aficionado, I must confess it is all greek to me. My six year old suffers my ignorance as he tries, again and again, to explain it all to me. But I can tell you that the book is visually a feast, with photographs of the Star Wars Lego sets dating back to 1999; it is so tantalizing that said six year old begs for the $1000 Millennium Falcon Lego set that, at this point, can only be obtained on eBay. This is the perfect gift book for the Star wars fan and reluctant reader. As we say time and time again, text is text, no matter what the source. So, if you are pulling your hair out to get your young reader to pick up a book and Star Wars interests him, grab this book! Oh, and possibly most important, it comes with a Lego minifigure!

A cool book for LEGO Star Wars fans!

Bought for my son's 9th birthday, he says, "This book has great details on all the LEGO Star Wars stuff--you can find out about all the characters, ships, weapons, droids too. It also tells you if you can still buy them, how much they cost, and when they were made. This book is fun to look at, especially with your friends."

Great Descriptive Book Leads Novices Or Pros Enjoyably Into The World Of Star Wars Legos

I bought this book as a gift for my 8 year old son...a big Star Wars Lego fan. I highly believe in buying things to read that the kids are very interested in...this automatically leads to a desire to read on the child's part. He has read this book repeatedly for the last several months and does not grow tired of it. He knows an incredible amount about the Star Wars Legos series now and is able to better to plan his Lego purchases accordingly. The information in the book is divided into categories well...there is a chronological timeline of manufacture as well as a seperation into the different Star Wars series...Classic vs. The Clone Wars. You will not be disappointed with this book.

Lego Star Wars at its best!

Absolutely fantastic! My fiancée and I love it and, of course, we aren't even children. It comes with a rare mini figure of Luke when he is getting a medal at the end of the first movie. Also the book gives all the set numbers so that I can look them up on e-bay and buy them if I want to. Most of the sets on the book are discontinued so I have to order them from the people who buy like a million sets at a time when they first come out. We give it an A+

    Lego Star Wars

My husband has been a big fan of both Legos and Star Wars since he was a kid- and he has passed that love on to our 5 year old son. I bought the Lego Star Wars Dictionary for our son. We gave it to him while we were on a very long road trip, and he loved it. It kept him occupied and entertained. He enjoyed looking at the sets that his father has collected over the last ten years, and telling us which ones he wants to get for himself. He also took it to his class at daycare when we came back from our trip. They did a show and tell with it and his teacher said the kids (even the girls) actually really liked looking at the pictures. This was a great purchase- for both my husband and my son.
