Overview

The third edition of Principles of Biochemistry remains faithful to the vision of its predecessors while embracing the tremendous advances made in biochemical research since the previous edition. As always, the book presents the fundamentals of biochemistry through selected topics, emphasizing the most important recent developments and applications without abandoning the classical core of the subject. The Third Edition is thoroughly contemporary in content, design, and teaching approach, with new material and references throughout, a number of new boxes on applications, striking new graphics, and new problems drawing on real-world examples. Supplements include a superb study guide/solutions manual, an exclusive tutorial Web site based on the Chemscape Chime 3-D molecular viewer, and the new Lehninger Lecture Notebook.

Preface

The new edition of Principles of Biochemistry continues to make progress toward completion and is scheduled to be out in April 2000.

We think you will find that the new edition remains faithful to the vision of its predecessors while embracing the tremendous advances made in biochemical research since the previous edition. As always, we’ve focused on communicating the fundamentals of the discipline, drawing in important findings and applications to keep students aware of the impact of biochemistry on their lives. For this edition, we have worked hard to provide a book that is thoroughly contemporary in its content, appearance, and teaching approach. Of course, we’ve updated the material and references throughout, to make sure the text truly represents the current state of the science. In addition, we incorporate a number of new boxes on applications, and have added striking new graphics and new problems drawing on real experimental data.

One area of the text that we have worked on extensively is the coverage of protein structure and function. In fact, we’ve already completed two new chapters for the Third Edition—one on the three-dimensional structure of proteins and one on protein function. Click here to read these new chapters on protein structure and protein function.

Sincerely,

David L. Nelson, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Michael M. Cox, University of Wisconsin-Madison

    Great Textbook

I've had to use 3 different biochemistry texts as an undergraduate and Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry was by far the most interesting, best written, and best laid out. I sold the other two texts back, but decided to keep Lehninger because I'm sure I'll be able to use it again someday.

    This is THE Boichemistry Book

If you want to understand biochemistry, you have no other choice. Medical schools should never choose another text. Graduate Biochemistry departments already know. And Bioinformatics hopefulls and enthusiasts need to start here.
