Description: This is a well-appreciated update to one of the two or three major textbooks in radiation oncology. The previous edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: It is intended as a comprehensive review of all aspects of radiation oncology with an emphasis on the multimodality approaches to treatment and recent advances in treatment planning and treatment delivery. The editors are recognized experts and leaders in the field of radiation oncology and have assembled an excellent group of contributors.
Audience: The book is written specifically for those working in the field of radiation oncology, including attending physicians, in-training physicians, physicists, dosimetrists, therapists, and nurses. It also is a valuable reference for those in the related specialties of medical oncology, pediatric oncology, surgical oncology, neurosurgery, and gynecologic oncology. The imaging and dosimetric color plates are of especially high quality for a book of this size.
Features: The four major sections cover radiation biology and physics, imaging, site-specific clinical radiation oncology, and emerging technologies. There is an abundance high-quality of tables and figures. The chapters are well organized and easy to read despite the enormity of the subject. References are current and the index is particularly helpful in finding specific topics.
Assessment: This is an excellently written and edited book. It is comprehensive, although slightly less so than its major competitor, Perez and Brady's Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology, 5th edition, Halperin et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2008). However, it is an easier read, and both should be in every radiation oncologist's library and in the library of any medical school or hospital that provides radiation oncology services.
