Kids have always been drawn to the dark side, from the works of Edward Gorey to the truly grim Grimm fairy tales. Now, don't be worried, parents: A little black humor and some dreadful plotlines will not make a kid a monster...we think. On that note, get your stereo ready for the dark, creepy, and serious score to Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Based on the bestselling kids' book series of the same name, the movie adaptation stars Jim Carrey as the conniving Count Olaf, forever scheming to get his hands on the poor Baudelaire orphans' inheritance. Mirroring the film's dark cinematography, five-time Oscar nominee Thomas Newman (The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty) sets the tone for the many ensuing unfortunate events. Newman hones his propensity for the dramatic with his trademark use of simple piano phrasing, set against a magical backdrop of synthesizers. The music suggests that doom lies perpetually around the corner -- and with Count Olaf constantly badgering the three sorry sods, it's only fitting. But the disc also packs its share of fast-paced tracks, such as "The Reptile Room" and "The Marvelous Marriage," which reflect the onscreen chaos. Delightfully orchestrated and perfectly moody, Newman's score is sure to gratify fans -- much to the dismay of the cantankerous Count Olaf.

    I Also Recommend:

A Series of Unfortunate Events Soundtrack

The film is based on the books by Lemony Snicket. All the tracks are great, especially the Bad Beginning. It really sets the mood and starts off the story. Another is Drive Away. Recommend the film, soundtrack and of course the books.

I've never heard anything like it

This has to be my favorite soundtrack of all time. Nearly every song on this album is outstanding, but most importantly, it contains Drive Away, my favorite song of all time. I swear, that thing is like the elixir of magic. If you loved the movie, or in general like soundtracks, this is defiantly the one to get.

    A reviewer

I liked the soundtrack and the movie and thought the music was well done and fitted the books and the movie from which we heard from. I recommend this and all the tracks especially the ending was one of my most favorites.

Moving and Reminiscent of the Movie

This soundtrack was, and is, very moving to me. I have many favorites on this CD. The music is really very amazing. The instruments have a full, resonating sound that pleases every ear (well, perhaps not at the beginning of Song #1!). I recommend it to anybody who loves beautiful music with action and sadness mixed in.

    Brilliant!

Once I saw the end of this movie I said to myself, " Wow, what great music!" I'm asking for the soundtrack for my birthday. My favorites are VFD, The Marvelous Mariage, and Loverly Spring. I can't stop listening to it!

    Great Music

As I listened to this CD, I thought, "This must be a chilling and depressing story." Then when I saw the movie, I was amazed at how well it fit the movie. WOW! Such great music to go along with a great movie!!

    Cool

I love these books. To be honest, I was a bit afraid to see the movie. But after I heard this music, I don't know...it is very fitting of the series. Hooray!!
