Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This entry in the "Soundprints Wild Habitats" storybook discovery series presents the ring-tailed lemur in its tropical dry forest habitat and the other animals that live there. Readers follow the lemur and its mother as they eat, sleep, avoid danger, signal to other lemurs, and hold a stink fight to claim a feeding ground from another troop. The watercolor illustrations are attractive and accurate. The text, presented in tidy framed rectangles, is written in immediate-sounding present tense and while not especially compelling, it gets the job done. Endmatter includes a map showing where Madascar is, a note about tropical dry forests and lemurs, and a double-page gatefold that shows twenty-one animals and plants found in dry forests, both in labeled individual squares and in the panorama that results when both are opened. A good introduction to this specific habitat. Available also in a read-along cassette with a stuffed lemur. 2001, Soundprints, $15.95. Ages 5 to 9. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-Listeners/readers follow a troop of ring tailed lemurs during their daily activities. Giant coua birds, a radiated tortoise, brown lemurs, shifakas, a harrier hawk, and a chameleon are introduced. They sunbathe, drink rainwater from empty snail shells, groom one another, eat sweet tamarind pods, play with each other, have a stink fight for territory, and search for a place to bed down for the night. The book by Deborah Dennard is narrated by the soothing female voice of Randye Kaye. The clear narration is accompanied by forest sounds of animals and insects. The cassette follows the book precisely throughout the story and the information page at the end. However, the book also includes a map and illustrated glossary of animals. Listeners learn about Madagascar's fragile habitat and its diverse flora and fauna. Classes studying Africa or habitats can use this in whole group settings. Individuals will also enjoy checking it out from the library.-Lisa Radmer, North Bend Elementary School, WA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
