Editorial Reviews

The New York Times Book Review
The go-to choice for both film geeks and casual couch potatoes.
San Francisco Chronicle
The best of the bunch.
Esquire
The single most important reference book in every home.
Library Journal

First published in 1969 as an outgrowth of Maltin's self-published serial Film Fan Monthly, this stout, newly updated paperback edition adds more than 300 paragraph-long review entries to its 17,000 succinct qualitative summaries. Rated on the star system, the films are organized alphabetically by title. Listings appear to be current only to mid-2007, since prominent films like No Country for Old Men, released in November 2007, are absent. Prefacing the book is an alphabetized contact list of distributors that specialize in rare movies. A lengthy index of stars and their movies rounds out the book. Recommended for public libraries and film collections.

    Worthy

A must for limited information. Wish all reviews were Leonards. A good source to initially judge whether you wish to see a film.

    Disappointing

The best thing about this book is the fact that it is up to date. But it omits many movies in which I am interested and the same is true for some performers. Better than nothing, but disappointing

Not user friendly if you need to search by actor

I know actor names far more often than I know movie titles, so if I come across a movie that I would like to know the title of, the format of this book does not work for me. The cast listings are extremely limited. I had to wonder at the reason an actor was included or left out... why Maggie Gyllenhaal was in and Kevin Bacon out is a mystery.

    Comprehensively good.

My husband John picked this book based on a recommendation. He agrees with the recommendation, a being "good" and what he needed.

Great yearly book for movie buffs

For any movie lover, this book is THE one to have for most any information on movies. Although one's own opinion may differ sometimes from Leonard's reviews, he always writes well and includes great detail. The only complaint (plea) is to publish these books as a two volume set so the print could be bigger. Otherwise, as the number of included movies grows each year, the book becomes larger, harder to read, and less manageable.

    Just the thing

This is exactly the kind of book movie buffs need to have at their disposal. How often do you watch TV, or get into a conversation with someone, and a movie name or character or actor come into question? Just turn to this book and most of the time the answers you need are right at your fingertips.
