Leonard Maltin has always been my favourite critic. But lately i've found it hard to agree with him about a lot of movies. First of all he has become a bit harsh. For e.g 'Bully' is a very audacious and realistic movie which is guaranteed to leave viewers on the edge of their seats but I was disappointed to see Leornard giving it only 2 stars. I wonder why he did not forgive the movie's 'exploitative nature' for its overall greatness, like he does with some other movies. 'Irreversible' is another movie the rating of which i'm disappointed about. Yes, it is violent and downright graphic (which is what the director intended)but it still manages to tell a comprehensive story with enough originality, nerve, honesty, and it's a technical achievement in more than one ways. There're other movies that i can mention here but i hope i've put my message across. On the other hand I notice that some movies like 'Nowhere in Africa' and 'Cider House Rules' are overrated. Anyway, i always have Leonard Maltin's Guide by my side because i need to refer to it frequently.
Year after year, I look all over for the best comprehensive movie and video guide, but Maltin continues to be the best. It never leaves my coffee table, and I don't know what I would do without it. For the reviewer who complained about the actor index, that is *not* the point of the book, and it doesn't try to offer a complete actor index because that is beyond the scope of the book. Imdb.com is a great source of movie credits, if that's what you are looking for. But for the lowdown on practically every movie ever made (at least any that you can still see while living in the USA today), this is the book.
All you people out there are reading the wrong bible. It seems that the churches all over the world gave out the wrong one. this is the one you should be worshiping because Jebus H. Christ is the one who wrote, god rest his soul.
In this book you are supposed to be able to look up movies by the actors who star in it, big surprise....forget about that. Even though it clearily says that the book lists actors that appear in movies that are in this book. Not the case, in fact, it barely lists any actors. For example, it doesn't include Christopher Walken, not to mention a slue of other very popular actors. Sorry, not impressed.
I invented a game called Marquis Madness, and this book is perfect for it. Here's how it works: I name a movie, you name an actor from the movie, then you name another movie that actor was in. For example: Tom Cruise--Risky Business--Rebecca deMornay--Hand that rocks the cradle, etc. There are other rules, such as the ability to confront (If I cannot name someone) and requesting Mulligans. This is a hot buttered companion to my game.
