Superb Illustrated Herbal Reference Book From 1543

Newest Addition to Taschen'S Historical Manuscript Collection

This year marks the 500th birthday of Leonhart Fuchs, physician and pioneer in modern botany. Educated in medicine, Fuchs soon discovered a passion for plants and embarked on an ambitious lifelong project to catalog the species.

Living in reformation era Germany, Fuchs changed universities frequently to research and teach without the restraints posed by the religious and scientific narrow-mindedness so prevalent at that time. A true radical, he was one of the first instructors ever to conduct botanical study excursions into the field.

In 1543, after years of research, he published a landmark medical book: an unprecedented comprehensive study of herbs. Cataloguing more than 500 types of plants, many of which originated in the recently-discovered New World, the New Kreüterbuch, or New Herbal, brought together masterly, detailed woodcuts of the plants with essays describing their features, origins, and medicinal powers. Fuchs's revolutionary book is still, nearly 500 years later, a model for botanical illustration and research.

The reproductions in Taschen's new publication are drawn from Fuchs's personal, hand-colored Herbal which has miraculously survived in pristine condition for four and a half centuries. It includes over 500 splendid illustrations, excerpted facsimiles of Fuchs's original text, and an essay comparing the use of healing herbs then and now. Both an important reference book and a superbly illustrated work, the New Herbal is, as Fuchs himself described it "a merry book to look at" and is, in this affordable edition, a must for both the art lover and the passionate botanist.
