Overview

Spanish guitarist Leopoldo de Urcullu presents the intriguing situation of a relatively modern composer for whom no biographical information is known, beyond the fact that some of his music was published in the 1830s and early 1840s, and that one writer referred to him as "ill-fated." Thus the music has to stand purely on its own. What it reveals is a composer working within the general style familiar from the music of Fernando Sor; Urcullu wrote minatures with an improvisatory quality, variations, and, apparently most abundantly, elaborations on operatic hits of the day. He was apparently a guitarist of considerable skill, for the operatic fantasies are real showpieces. Spanish guitarist Eugenio Tobalina lets you see him sweat a little in these, which is perhaps all to the good. The most attractive feature of the seven Urcullu pieces heard here is their spaciousness and big sweep, on display in the opening "La Amistad: Introducción y Polaca." It's not known what brand of friendship the title evokes, but the long, languid introduction is an exceptional piece of music for a mellow mood. The recording is closer than any human listener would get (it's hard to speak for the insect family) and will be too noisy for many, although the small details of Tobalina's playing come through. Nothing that really lives up to the "quite extraordinary music" promised on the package is here, but guitarists looking for a big and unfamiliar recital item should get to know these obscure works.
