Overview

When these recordings of Janácek's "Taras Bulba," "Suite from From the House of the Dead," and "The Ballad of Blanik" were made in 1999, the then 28-year-old Austrian conductor Christian Arming had been music director of the Czech Republic's Janácek Philharmonic Orchestra for four years. Not surprisingly, then, these are youthful performances with impetuous tempos, reckless rhythms, and ever so slightly rushed climaxes. But while these qualities would not fit the more staid music of Brahms or Bruckner, they fit the wildly passionate music of Janácek like a glove. In "Taras Bulba," Arming and the JPO aim for agony, ecstasy, and transfiguration and hit it with performances that glow with patriotic pride. In the "Suite from From the House of the Dead," Arming and the JPO aim for liberty, equality, and fraternity and hit it with performances that shine with humanistic dignity. Even in the less well-known and less well-formed "Ballad of Blanik," Arming and the JPO turn in a performance as well-played as any and more enthusiastic than most. For some listeners, Arming's impulsiveness and the JPO's occasionally ragged ensemble may be off-putting, but for listeners who know the music of the ur-nationalist and proto-modernist Janácek, these qualities will only enhance its intrinsic natural exuberance. Arte Nova's sound is little dim and a bit shallow.
