All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger
Victor Hugo's 19th century French historical novel Les Misérables found its way to the stage in 1980 as a remarkably successful musical, and finally the big screen in 1996 sans all of the singing, but it wasn't until 2012 that the two mediums would finally meet. Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper, in his wisdom (depending on which side of the "should stage actors be replaced by more bankable, less vocally adept film actors when Broadway makes the jump to Hollywood), decided to have his actors sing live (stage veteran Hugh Jackman and newcomer Samantha Barks steal the show). This 2 disc version of the soundtrack is about as complete as any cast recording. My original London Cast Recording leaves out "Fantine's Arrest" and some of the music from the barricade scenes, for example. I wish they had included more of the recitatives and music that was written specifically for the movie, such as the scene where Javert first encounters Jean Valjean as mayor in the factory, and the scene where Javert offers to resign for incorrectly believing the mayor is Jean Valjean, just before "Who Am I."

The singing is a little more raw than we are used to from the concert productions and the cast recordings, but the film cast brings passion. Much has been said about Anne Hathaway's brilliant performance of Fantine, but I feel not enough superlatives have been shown at Hugh Jackman and Eddie Redmayne. Hugh Jackman is the best leading man in musical theatre right now (two Tony Awards and counting) and thoroughly deserved his Academy Award nomination. His voice is rich and powerful, as well as sensitive and subdued, as the scene requires. Not since The Fountain has he had a role that showcased his immense talent and allowed him to prove that he is one of the best actors out there--so much more than Wolverine or a pretty face/body. Eddie Redmayne also brought the intensity, that made his Marius leap off the screen for me. His version of "Empty Chairs" is so moving and I look forward to perhaps seeing him sing again in a film or on stage. With more consistent training, he could make an excellent musical lead on stage.

Director Tom Hooper wanted Les Miz finished in 2 1/2 hours, meaning he had to cut DOG EAT DOG,
butcher TURNING and DRINK WITH ME, and other small cuts. That being said, I love the 2 disc soundtrack
and the movie!  I had reservations about Russell Crowe's singing, but he moved me nevertheless.
Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Samantha Barks, esp. Eddie Redmayne are all terrific!
