Meet the Author

Victor-Marie Hugo (26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist who was the most important of the French Romantic writers. Though regarded in France as one of that country’s greatest poets, he is better known abroad for such novels as Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) and Les Misérables (1862).
In France, Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry but also rests upon his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem, and Hugo is sometimes identified as the greatest French poet. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables and Notre-Dame de Paris (also known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame).

I began this novel somewhat reluctantly, having had bad experiences with French literature in the past; reluctance quickly turned into a gripping anticipation as to what would happen next and a veneration for the author’s preponderance of lofty moral and social lessons weaved in and out of the plot line. Though it took me a good two months to work my way through the 1500+ pages, the experience was well worthwhile. Yes, reading this book is definitely a major time commitment, but if you can swing it, don’t pass up the opportunity to read

If you haven't read this book read this edition!

I found that this version is a really good one. The translation is nearly flawless. It reads wonderfully. If you have not read this book do yourself a good deed and read it. This is a powerful book.

    Review

For my humanities class we were given a list of french novels to choose from, L¿s Miserabl¿s being one. I cannot say that this was the best book i have ever read, but it exceeded my expectations by far. The storyline is phenomenal, and the characters will leave a mark on you forever.

    Fantastic book!

This book starts off very slow, but i promise you will be pleased if you stay with it. As soon as the character Jean vou Jean was introduced, i could not put it down. I am not usually a fan of older books, but this is a favorite.
