Anna has a tough life; deserted by her husband, left with two kids to rear, and possessing no job skills, she takes a job as a delivery truck driver for HomeMaid Cakes. She copes with hostility from supervisors, harassment from customers, and violence on the streets of New York City in this funny and gritty first novel by Jedren. Reader Pamela Hensley Vincent does a good job with the voices and accents of the city, but the abridgment makes the narrative pace jerky at times. Anna's personality and her emergence as her own person are what make this work engaging. A good purchase for larger collections.-Trish Ridgeway, Handley Lib., Winchester, Va.
