Editorial Reviews

Sports activities are as universal as anything can be. This simple paperback offers a global view of sports through children's quotes from around the world. It also features fascinating, eye-opening photographs of children playing sports the world over. Basketball in Kenya, volleyball in Thailand, ice-skating in Russia—these are just some of the highlights. This book would be especially interesting and educational for sports-loving children. 2000, Charlesbridge Publishing, $6.95. Ages 5 to 10. Reviewer: A. Braga SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8

K-Gr 5-In addition to illustrating how children all over the world love sports, this book will inspire youngsters to get involved in athletics and teach them about sportsmanship. Full-color photographs, often three to a page, feature children from many nations participating in a variety of games and competitions. For example, young soccer players from Israel, Guatemala, Bolivia, Ghana, Argentina, Brazil, Pakistan, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, the United Kingdom, and the United States are depicted. The photos are grouped by theme rather than sport, e.g., practicing, teamwork, and winning and losing. These pictures and the highlighted quotes from children help to reinforce the concept that even though they may come from many different lands and cultural backgrounds they have something in common. This book is unique in its approach to the subject and will make a good addition.-Barb Lawler, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
