Overview

WARNING: This book contains graphic descriptions of violence.
Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo might look like the ideal couple, but they were a nation's most despicable killers. Karla began their depraved sex and murder spree by stealing drugs to knock out her little sister. While Paul raped and sodomized the unconscious girl, Karla dutifully caught it all on videotape.
Unbelievably, the worst was yet to come. In a brazen daylight kidnapping, Karla lured schoolgirl Kristen French to their car and helped Paul force the struggling, screaming teenager inside. Then, just as she had with fourteen-year-old Leslie Mahaffy, Karla videotaped Paul's repeated beatings and rape of his sex slave, violated the terrified girl herself, then simply watched as Paul choked the life out of his victim.
The entire nation was horrified by these crimes in what became the costliest and, by far, most controversial manhunt and most sensational trial in Canada's history. Now the full shocking story--considered too grisly for newspaper and television coverage at the time--can finally be told. . . .

Very Well Written Book: WARNING VERY GRAPHIC AND DISTURBING!

Unless you are 100% interested in this devastating murder case, do not read this book. I was in deed very interested in this case, especially knowing that Karla is coming out of jail July 5th 2005. I wanted to be very clearl of the story, and know exactly what went on. Even though this story seemed a little biased, I still believe that Karla was pressured into doing everything she did, and her actions do not at all come close to Pauls. Yet she in deed is a danger to society, and this book does allow you to see that, and allow you to see how disgusting these two individuals were. This book is very graphic and disturbing, so unless you are sure you can handle this, do not read it. I was not able to sleep the night I read the forst 200 pages of the book. God Bless all the families who had to go through all this....

    Devastating, Haunting.

I didnt take the warnings on the book literally, but should have. Painfull, blow by blow acounts of the ordeal that each of those poor girls faced has haunted me since I read it over four years ago. Considering the victims families, and the quantity of material from transcripts of the assults. I wonder if the level of detail is entirley necessary. The book leaves you in no doubt that Paul Bernardo is one of the most evil men alive today. Even if you are not easily disturbed, the details in this book are nothing less than devasting.

    unbelievable

I have read almost everything there is to read about this case, I just can't believe that Paul and Karla could do such things to those poor girls, I have read this book twice and I am on my third time around, I don't know what it is about this case that keeps me so interested, but if anyone has any other articles or anything about this case, would you please e-mail it to me.

    Very disturbing!

I was a teenage girl living in Norhtern Ontario the same age as Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy and I remember the case quite well. The thing that creeped me and my friends out the most, was that I look nearly identical to Kristen. It scared me very much and when I bought the book with all those horrific details, it really hit home. I think they totally portrayed Karla as a battered and scared wife but as far as I'm concerned, she is just as guilty as he is for not letting them go when she had a chance. Those girls didn't have to die and she could have prevented it(not to mention setting her own sister up!) That says something quite different about her. The way those two looked, just goes to show that you can't trust anybody. Leslie's mom once said in an interview that 'evil doesn't wear a trench coat and sit on a park bench anymore' and I must say I totally agree with her. I had nightmares but I wasn't able to put it down.

    Excellent book, but graphic.

This was a very good book that definitely does not leave out much detail. I felt like I was reading a horror story. The book does get very graphic so if you are squeamish you may not want to read it. I had to stop reading the book several times during certain sections. Having gone through the relationship and brutal attacks, I did wish that the book had gone into a little more detail of the trial. As a reader I felt like I was looking to make sure that they were going to pay for their crimes.

    Great Detail!

This book was unbelievable... as many other Canadians.. I grew up thinking Canada was a pretty safe place to live. Atleast safer than the U.S. but after hearing about Karla and Paul and all the other crime multiplying in this country it's hard to believe i could be living beside a murderer! I could not put this book down even though it was VERY hard to read all the details.. which i still find hard to think that anyone could do such disgusting things! BUT all in all a GREAT read and I'm in the process of reading Invisible Darkness and Deadly Innocence!

    SCARED STIFF

I was a grade 12 student in high school living in Scarborough when I met Paul Bernardo in a Toronto night club. I was quite taken by him....we saw eachother a few times ...little did I know he was a murderer! This book was the most explicit...and the most informative book I have read about this murder case. I am going to continue my search of books related to this topic. Can anyone make any suggestions?

    Couldn't put it down

I have never read such a book as interesting as this. I have never been a 'book' fan. My sister started reading this first, and she told me about it. I started reading it, and it was incredible. How can someone hide such a thing and play everything as if it were okay. I have heard of many sick doings in my life, but you would ever think that it would happen to you? I was so aware of everything that was going on after I read this. These two are really sick and demented. It makes you think twice about what could happen right before your eyes.

    Was Karla Innocent???

Overall I really enjoyed this title. I gave information about Paul and Karla. This book told it how it was, in great detail I might add. There was a few things that I disliked about it though. I thought that Karla was not represented very well. This book sort of made her appear not guilty. There was too much 'poor Karla' in it. It shouldn't matter how much you are abused, there is no justification for the crimes she committed. I just have to say that the plea bargin was a joke, it really was a 'deal with the devil'. I must give credit where credit is due though. Leathal Marriage did represent Paul as the monster he really is, congrats to the author! I would definately recommend this book as good reading material if you are in to real crime. Just make sure you don't have a weak stomach!

    A disturbing read:

I have always been fascinated with the criminal mind and have, until now, believed that humans are a product of society, upbringing and experiences. It is now my belief that humans can be born evil. Paul Bernardo and his beautiful bride Karla Homolka are the very essence of evil. In his book, Nick Pron has gone into great detail about the unspeakable crimes of this Ken and Barbie couple. The reader is taken on a journey with this book, into the cruel and sadistic minds of 2 very demented people, whose actions left me feeling nauseated and repulsed. At one stage of book, when 15 school girl Kristen French's torture and sexual abuse were being described to me in great detail, I found myself having to throw the book down and run to the bathroom where I proceeded to throw up several times. An entirely compelling read. In writing this book, Pron has given the reader a thought provocative and stomach churning account of canada's most evil couple. I found this book very hard to put down. For anyone who believes that humans can not possibly be 'born evil' perhaps this book will change your opinion as it has changed mine. The author has not expressed his personal view, leaving the reader to make up their own mind to the extent of Karla Homolka's actions and involvement in this case. You will at times wonder whether she also a victim- the obedient wife who was brainwashed by her demented husband, or whether she is just as guilty as her husband by indulging and in all his sick, sexual fantasies. A disturbing read which will keep me awake for many nights, I am sure, and will leave me to wonder how I will ever walk alone down the street at night.

    What are the chances?

Unbelievable... Great read. Could not put this book down. Wondering why I haven't had nightmares yet. What I have a hard time comprehending is that there were TWO (2) people who conspired over this. There are plenty of sick people in the world but what are the chances of one of them meeting another person with the same sick mind and discussing sick fantasies and then bring their fantasies to life? I just can't believe that they found each other. They definately deserve each other and they also deserve the death penalty. I would put money on the fact that Karla will not be safe anywhere in canada when she is released. I think she will live hell here on earth until her day comes to face the lord and answer to him. He is only one who truly knows whether or not she enjoyed this or not. I have a strong opinion from all of the books about this case that she was an instigator as well as co-conspiritor to these despicable crimes. I liked the fact that she was not looked at as a compliant victim in this book. I was very disappointed that there were no pictures. Was a very detailed read - highly recommend it.

    Unbelievably shocking

Lethal Marriage was one of the most shocking books I have ever read. It definitly gave me a good look into the mind of a man I would have never thought was this evil. I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks they can handle it. I thought I knew everything there was to know about this, I was wrong, dead wrong.

I can't believe he got away with what he did.

I can't believe that Paul and Karla Teale got away with what they did for so long. The book was detailed into the facts that these poor girls were tortured and to hear that Kristen French heard her dad pleading on the t.v. was just saddening.

Good read, even though it is a true story.

It was a good descriptive read. I'm glad Karla was not upheld as a victim in this book. The author was very accurate with dates and events that prevented this story to be fully publicized, like the O.J. Simpson trial. I still can't believe there are real people like this in the world. Too bad Canada doesn't have the death penalty or an eye for an eye.
