Overview

When her four year old daughter informs her a sick man is in their yard, Honor Gillette rushes out to help him. But that "sick" man turns out to be Lee Coburn, the man accused of murdering seven people the night before. Dangerous, desperate, and armed, he promises Honor that she and her daughter won't be hurt as long as she does everything he asks. She has no choice but to accept him at his word.

But Honor soon discovers that even those close to her can't be trusted. Coburn claims that her beloved late husband possessed something extremely valuable that places Honor and her daughter in grave danger. Coburn is there to retrieve it — at any cost. From FBI offices in Washington, D.C., to a rundown shrimp boat in coastal Louisiana, Coburn and Honor run for their lives from the very people sworn to protect them, and unravel a web of corruption and depravity that threatens not only them, but the fabric of our society

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Honor Gillette is quietly making cupcakes in her small town Louisiana kitchen when her four-year-old daughter runs in to tell her about the bloody man in the backyard. The stranger she soon encounters is Lee Coburn, an FBI agent accused of murdering seven people just the night before. Honor and her daughter are taken hostage, but as Honor soon discovers, being a fugitive's captive will soon be the least of her problems. Sandra Brown's romantic novel about a falsely accused deep-cover operative and a widow on the run holds its allure with constantly escalating suspense.

Publishers Weekly
At the start of this pulse-pounding thriller from bestseller Brown (Tough Customer), Honor Gillette is baking cupcakes in the kitchen of her Tambour, La., home when her four-year-old daughter, Emily, tells her a bloodied man is outside in the yard. Lee Coburn is on the run, the object of a manhunt for the cold-blooded murder of seven people, including one of Tambour's most prominent citizens. Promising not to harm Emily, Lee takes Honor hostage, but only because she may have the key to solving an even bigger puzzle: the identity of the Bookkeeper, a criminal mastermind with power over local law enforcement and government. Honor's policeman husband, Eddie, who died in an accident two years earlier, may have had information about the mysterious and malicious Bookkeeper. When it becomes apparent that the mass murders and Eddie's death might be connected, trying to prove the link could cost Lee and Honor their lives. A relentless pace and clever plot twists keep the pages turning. (Sept.)
Library Journal
In this potboiler, undercover FBI agent Lee Coburn is framed for a brutal multiple murder, which he witnessed and escaped. Lee pursues his original investigation while on the run, trying to identify the local kingpin behind the transportation of illegal drugs. His probe collides with the quiet lives of a young widow and her daughter, who are scooped up into his plight. Unfortunately, the plot is quick, but contrived; the characters are memorable but cartoonish; the reading by actor Victor Slezak is adequate but uninspired. Libraries should buy only as demand warrants. ["Fast paced and full of surprises, this taut thriller features a large cast of superbly drawn characters and the perfect amounts of realistic dialog and descriptive prose," read the more positive starred review of the New York Times best-selling Grand Central hc, LJ 7/11; the Grand Central pb will publish this month.—Ed.]—Kristen L. Smith, Loras Coll. Lib., Dubuque, IA
Kirkus Reviews

An FBI agent, deep undercover, is the prime suspect in a mass murder and must uncover the corrupt forces behind the killings to clear his name.

When 4-year-old Emily tells her mother, Honor, that there's a strange man in their backyard in Tambour, a small Louisiana bayou town, Honor is skeptical. But when she goes to check, the man, Coburn, accosts her.Holding her at gunpoint, Coburn ransacks her home, looking for something he won't divulge—but it involves her late husband Eddie, a Tambour police officer killed in a suspicious car accident.Meanwhile, Tambour police, deputy sheriffs and twin brothers Doral and Fred, who were Eddie's best friends, are searching for Coburn, a warehouse employee who allegedly shot his employer and six others and is now on the run. When Stan, Eddie's father, grows suspicious, he directs the posse to Honor's remote house.Finding nothing on Eddie, Coburn finally leaves, only to double back in time to shoot Fred, who has just arrived to check on Honor.Fred was ordered to kill Honor, Coburn claims, because the twins (and possibly Eddie before them) are in the employ of a sinister figure known only as the Bookkeeper who "facilitates" trans-border trafficking in humans, drugs and weapons. Now it's unsafe for Honor and Emily to stay put—Doral will hunt her down.Still unwilling to believe that her husband, a decorated cop, was implicated in such depravity, Honor nevertheless flees with Coburn, Emily in tow.As they hide out on a deserted shrimp boat, Coburn bucks his Washington boss's directive that he come in from the cold, and Honor fights her attraction to him (without success, naturally).Subplots involving a street thug who is the Bookkeeper's chief enforcer, Honor's brassy girlfriend Tori and her serial marriages, and an honest but ineffectual FBI officer and his wife, whose lives revolve around their severely disabled son, add some interest to a story line which is otherwise pat and predictable.

Standard Brown fare.

Meet the Author

Sandra Brown
Sandra Brown

Sandra Brown is the author of sixty New York Times bestsellers, including TOUGH CUSTOMER (2010), SMASH CUT (2009), SMOKE SCREEN (2008), PLAY DIRTY (2007), RICOCHET (2006), CHILL FACTOR (2005), WHITE HOT (2004), HELLO, DARKNESS (2003), THE CRUSH (2002), ENVY (2001), THE SWITCH (2000), THE ALIBI (1999), UNSPEAKABLE (1998) and FAT TUESDAY (1997), all of which have jumped onto the Times bestseller list in the number one to five spot. Brown now has over seventy million copies of her books in print worldwide, and her work has been translated into thirty-three languages.

Biography

In 1979, Sandra Brown lost her job at a television program and decided to give writing a try. She bought an armful of romance novels and writing books, set up a typewriter on a card table and wrote her first novel. Harlequin passed but Dell bit, and Brown was off and writing, publishing her works under an assortment of pseudonyms.

From such modest beginnings, Brown has evolved into multimillion publishing empire of one, the CEO of her own literary brand; she towers over the landscape of romantic fiction. Brown has used her growing clout to insist her publishers drop the bosom-and-biceps covers and has added more intricate subplots, suspense, and even unhappy endings to her work. The result: A near-constant presence on The New York Times bestsellers list. In 1992, she had three on the list at the same time, joining that exclusive club of Stephen King, Tom Clancy, J. K. Rowling, and Danielle Steel.

Her work in the mainstream realm has taken her readers into The White House, where the president's newborn dies mysteriously; the oil fields and bedrooms of a Dallas-like family dynasty; and the sexual complications surrounding an investigation into an evangelist's murder. Such inventions have made her a distinct presence in a crowded genre.

"Brown is perhaps best known now for her longer novels of romantic suspense. The basic outline for these stories has passionate love, lust, and violence playing out against a background of unraveling secrets and skeletons jumping out of family closets," wrote Barbara E. Kemp in the book Twentieth-Century Romance & Historical Writers . Kemp also praises Brown's sharp dialogue and richly detailed characters. "However, her greatest key to success is probably that she invites her readers into a fantasy world of passion, intrigue, and danger," she wrote. "They too can face the moral and emotional dilemmas of the heroine, safe in the knowledge that justice and love will prevail."

Critics give her points for nimble storytelling but are cooler to her "serviceable prose," in the words of one Publishers Weekly reviewer. Still, when writing a crack page-turner, the plot's the thing. A 1992 New York Times review placed Brown among a group of a writers "who have mastered the art of the slow tease."

Staggeringly prolific, Brown found her writing pace ground to a halt when she was given a different assignment. A magazine had asked her for an autobiographical piece, and it took her months to complete. Her life in the suburbs, though personally fulfilling, was nonetheless blander than fiction. That may be why she dives into her fiction writing with such workhorse gusto. "I love being the bad guy," she told Publishers Weekly in 1995, "simply because I was always so responsible, so predictable growing up. I made straight A's and never got into any trouble, and I still impose those standards on myself. So writing is my chance to escape and become the sleaziest, scummiest role."

When she started writing, her goal was always to break out of the parameters of romance. After about 45 romances, the woman who counts Tennessee Williams and Taylor Caldwell among her influences told The New York Times that felt she had reached a plateau. In fact, she doesn't even look at her books as romances anymore. "I think of my books now as suspense novels, usually with a love story incorporated," she said. "They're absolutely a lot harder to write than romances. They take more plotting and real character development. Each book is a stretch for me, and I try something interesting each time that males will like as well as women."

Good To Know

  • "I hate to exercise and only do so because I absolutely must."

  • "I love to eat and my favorite foods are all bad for the body. Fried chicken and gravy, TexMex, red meat (hey, I'm from Texas!). My only saving grace is that I'm not that fond of sweets. Salty is my thing. Chocolate cake and ice cream I can skip. But a bag of Fritos. . ."

  • "It takes me a long time to go to sleep, usually because I read in bed and hate to put down the book. But when I do nod off, I'm a champion sleeper. I can easily do eight or nine hours a night."

  • "My worst "thing" is mean-spirited people. People who deliberately belittle or embarrass someone really irk me. The people I admire most are the ones who find something good about even the most undesirable individual. That was a quality my mother had, the one I hope most to emulate."

  • "I have a fear of gravity. Recently my whole family went to Belize. We had several adventures. We tubed a river through miles of cave, wearing head lamps so we'd have illumination. No problem. I scaled Mayan ruins. I rode horseback (on a monster named Al Capone) through the rain forest. No problem. But I couldn't zip line. Even though my five-year-old grandsons did it with glee, I just couldn't make that leap."

      Fantastic book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely loved this book! She is one of my top ten favorite authors. She is the master of tease - that name has followed her from critics, and this book is no different. I loved it, and was kept in complete suspense mode from beginning to end. I highly recommend it. All wonderful characters and superb dialogue!!!!!!!!!! I also Loved THE CHATEAU by C D Swanson. A masterpiece of suspense and twists and turns. This fairly newcomer, Swanson is already on my top ten list! She knows how to keep the reader riveted, and kept me guessing throughout the entire book. This should be a movie! LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      LETHAL By Sandra Brown

When Honor Gillette's young daughter discovers an injured man in the front yard, Honor runs out to help. The man turns out to be Lee Coburn... accused of murdering 7 people the night before. Dangerous, desperate & armed, he promises Honor that she and her daugjter won't be hurt as long as she does everything he asks. Honor has no choice but to accept him at his word.

This story takes many twists and turns... many of them difficult to follow at times. Many characters evolve, some with multiple identites. If you can sit down and read uninterrupted, the story isn't quite as confusing... however I found myself re-reading several chapters. Overall, it's a good read with a nice surprise ending. A bit expensive on the Nook... just a few dollars less than buying the hardback.

This is an exciting thriller written by a writer who always delivers a bestseller

In Tambour, Louisiana, four year old Emily Gillette informs her mother Honor that a stranger dripping blood is in their yard. Assuming her daughter's imagination is running wild, the Widow Honor checks anyway. Holding a gun Lee Coburn is fleeing from the police who believe he killed seven people on a mass murder spree.

Coburn searches her home hoping to find a clue left there by Honor's late husband Eddie a cop who dies in a car accident two years ago. He fails to find what he seeks. Eddie's father sends the cops to check on his granddaughter, but Coburn is already gone. However, he shoots a cop Fred who he swears to Honor was sent there by the Bookkeeper who runs illegal trafficking and owns the local police, including Coburn believes her husband.

This is an exciting thriller that grips the audience from the moment Coburn points his gun at the frightened mom and never slows down even with some intriguing subplots involving other people. The entertaining story line is character driven by the mom who must decide between believing an accused mass murder who claims her late spouse was dirty and the cops including her husband she has known all her life. Although the tale follows the anticipated course, fans will enjoy the visit to Tambour, the Gulf and DC with Sandra Brown as the tour guide.

      A Big Disappointment!

What makes a writer of romance novels think that her readers, primarily women, want to read a story about violence to both women and children with a questionable hero and a very naive and souless supporting cast. For once, I found a Sandra Brown book very easy to put down and hard to pick up again. The only thing that kept me reading was the assurance that the book would end somewhat happily in a Shakespearen tragedy sort ot way. Even the ending left me feeling like we were deprived of at least a decent wrap up-how were Honor and Colton going to resolve their disparate life-styles, would they marry, where would they live, would Colton completely recover etc? Next time I will wait for the reviews before I run out and buy one of her books hot off the press.

I was soooo disappointed with the ending in this book. I will think twice before I buy another one of her books. This is the second book that I have read of hers where the ending sucks.

This book starts off good but falls apart with the villain in the story. Okay so she doesn't have to tell you if it's a male or female character but in the end it just doesn't make sense and the author does little to make it believable ( or to me at any rate ) I expect more from Sandra Brown with stories like Rainwater ......I loved that book!

      Disappointing!

This is my least favorite book I've read by Sandra Brown. Even though I hadn't figured out who The Bookkeeper was, the whole plot was just sort of anticlimactic. Top it off with the fact that the ending was just stupid. I read it twice because I was sure I had missed something, but no. The ending is just dumb and disappointing. Overall, this book is a big letdown when I think about what I expect to read in a Sandra Brown book.

He says he is a victim of circumstance but Honor's only concern is their safety and what he plans to do with the gun pointed at her head. Coburn's mission is to absolve hiimself of the crimes he did not commit and find something hidden in Honor's house.

Whatever is driving Coburn to tear her house apart and terrorize her is nothing she knows anything about. Her late husband did not leave anything worth killing for and his death was accidental but Coburn begs to differ on all her accounts including the details she believes to be true about her late husband. As time goes by and more people wind up dead she starts to wonder who is telling the truth and who is pretending to.

Coburn has both saved Honor and terrorized her, yet as Honor asks questions his answers begin to make more sense about what he is doing. Going on the run was never on anyone's to do list but staying ahead of the local authorities and the FBI is a challenge she is showing she is up for and proving she is worth the risk Coburn is taking by keeping her with him.

As more people become involved in the manhunt for them, Coburn and Honor tear across the state in search of the key to unlock the secrets with absolutely no idea what they are looking for. The place they keep landing is her father in law's house and it is time for a showdown with him. Coburn believes the hunt for answers began there and will end there one way or another even if it involves tearing apart childhood dreams and momentos. But will Honor be able to protect her husband's reputation or is she helping Coburn prove him to be a dirty cop.

Meetings are set up, shots are fired, cars explode and the person behind Coburn believes is behind everything the elusive "Bookkeeper" is still lurking in the shadows. The mysterious "Bookkeeper" can't be found or identified but has been sending out the orders and running this nightmare organization from burn phones and secured emails.

Sandra Brown has proven year after year the incredible ability she has to write thrillers that draw you in and take you on a adventure. But this book far exceeds any in the past as it keeps you guessing as to who is the shadow boss, where is the key to the answers, and what is the motive behind all of this. Unbelievable barely scratches the surface of how great this book and when it all comes together you find yourself gasping with unexpected revelations. The only downside is Ms. Brown apparently likes to tease her fans with cliffhangers - which you have to read to understand.

I normally enjoy Sandra Brown's books but her last two Tough Customer and Lethal have been a disappointment. The endings in both these books are terrible. I hope some future book holds a closure for these characters. I will be hesitant to buy another book written by Sanda Brown for fear she will leave me
deprived of a decent ending once again..

Who says the end is bad???

Loved it and I'm glad I didn't listen to the reviews I read. The book kept me reading all night and the end took nothing from it. Instead the end says, "anything is possible".

Awesome!!! If you want a book with twists and turns that you can't put down, this is the book for you. Even with all the action, drama and twists, the story is still believable and draws you in until you just can't stop reading. One of her best.
