Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The Roops have provided historical information about the origins of Christmas and the many customs from different parts of the world. It is interesting to learn about the different dates of gift giving (December 6 in Belgium and Holland, December 13 in Sweden, and the like). What does seem strange, given the title of the book, are the sections about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. It's eclectic in content with facts, fiction, crafts, and stories all lumped together, which may make it difficult for parents and teachers to explain.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 3A collection of holiday questions, each answered with an essay that is anywhere from a paragraph to a few pages long. "Why Do We Decorate Trees?" "Why Do We Sing Carols at Christmas?" "What Kinds of Food Do People Eat on Christmas?" are only a few of the questions posed and answered. Watercolor illustrations and borders are festive but spare enough to let the white space on each page dominate. Although the question, "Why Do We Celebrate Christmas?" mentions the birth of Christ, the emphasis is clearly not on the religious aspects of the holiday, but its trappings. There is a nod to universality here, with mentions of what people around the world may eat and how to say Merry Christmas in other languages, and two questions that refer to Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. Some gift and craft ideas are included. Although certainly not all inclusive, this is a pleasant, competent look at some holiday rituals, how they are celebrated, and why.
