About the Author

Keith Gilyard is Professor of Writing and English and Director of the Writing Program at Syracuse University. He received his M.F.A. from Columbia University and his Ed.D. from New York University. He is the author of a book of poetry, American Forty and Voices of the Self. He is also the editor of Spirit and Flame: An Anthology of African American Poetry and a co-editor of Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle ... And Other Modern Verse.
